Dr. Si's Curse of the Crimson Throne - Escape From Old Korvosa

Mhairi waits by the lever as the others look around at the new section. "Ed, there's no guarantee we're anywhere in particular. With teleportation magic we might not even be in Korvosa anymore. I don't see how else this little lever can move something as massive as a whole room otherwise."

"Just so," says Vencarlo. "So do we risk this corridor, which is almost certainly a trap, or do we wait and pull the lever again to see what the next entertainment Glorio Arknoa has lined up for us?"

Mhairi paused long enough for any of the boys to respond. Their silence told her enough. They were in trouble. Deep trouble...

"If this lever triggers some magical teleporter then I don't think it matters how many times we pull it. There's too any variables that we can't know. Which hand to use, being just the first problem. But...there's got to be a shortcut that family members use. They can't just cycle around and around looking for it, so it should be here with the lever. It's the only room you're certain to get..."

OOC: Sorry, missed the update :(

Edmond enters newly opened hall just enough to mark it with his chalk and updates his map.

"You can pull again, Mhairri, I don't think there is teleporting involved and even if it is, we should recognize some features eventually. Let's try it couple times more and see if we circle through."

With a smile that did little to alleviate the concern on her face, Mhairi yanked the lever again as soon as everyone was back in the little room.

Dr Simon, how about you show us next two iterations (assuming that Edmond marks each one before "rolling" again. If we don't recognize anything, we'll decide what to do next.

The next pull of the lever reveals a small circular room with a pool in the centre. Edmond labels it, a short wait, pull the lever again. As before, somewhere a bell rings, machinery grinds, the room shakes. This time the pool room is replaced with a room with another lever - it looks like the first one you encountered, with two tiger statues in niches. Just to make sure, Edmond labels it and Mhairi pulls the lever again. Back to the corridor with the disturbing murals.

In all, after some experimentation, it seems that there are four possible configurations that follow sequentially.

Images will follow shortly, I thought I had them on a flash drive but I don't.

These are the four configurations. The rectangular corridor in 3 and 4 is the same, the one with the tiger heads. The angular corridor in 1 and 2 is the same, the one with the disturbing murals, but it flips ends between the two. In configuration 1 you haven't been past the door beyond the symbol of sleep room; in configuration 2 you haven't been down the mural corridor to see what is at the end in that formation. There is also a pool in configuration 4.

OOC: And we still have to look at what the other lever does :) Yay!? Lets make a plan of action here. I suggest we take the chests first, it seems we're fairly isolated and have enough room to rest if anything goes badly bang. We put Venkarlo or Mhairri or Manachan inside (most chance to avoid traps) and we wait outside at the ready for summons or to help. Maybe with simple spells to aid saving throws :)

OOC: I do not have resistance. I do have virtue though, to soak up a sliver of the damage, ;) . And resist energy, if we can figure out what it does after a few mishaps.

"Is this wise?" says Vencarlo upon entering the room with the chests. "In my, admittedly limited, experience, almost everything in here is certain to be a trap. Would it not be more prudent to simply find a way out?"

The room looks exactly as it did before - three small chests lined along one wall, on the other a circular design of tigers forming rings around a red gem set in the wall.

"Wise or not, we're not here only to get you out, but to find another man lost in here. Now, we can point you in the direction we think the exit is. Now that we know which settings turns are where it is just a matter of playing with the lever until you get to another lever and turning it.

As for the chests, maybe there are traps, but it could also be Arcona treasure. I don't feel bad at all taking their unjustly acquired riches for the good of the prople."

Mhairi grinned. "I'm fine with taking all their money too. Practical experience says that they probably won't have chests of coins hidden away. Aristocrats like the Arcona's keep their wealth in land mostly. And art. Supposed to stop people breaking in and stealing it, I guess."

Moving toward the small room with the chests, she added, "If none of you big tough hero types will, I'll go take a look."

ooc: Thoroughly examining the area for traps. Start with the door frame, then the tiger, then each chest. Will keep to the side of the tiger until it is examined. Perception +12 for trapfinding.

Vencarlo glances at Edmond and squints as if concentrating.

"Of course. Neolandus; he's why I came here in the first place. I haven't seen him down here, but then I can't say I've been everywhere in this maze." He moves over and looks over Mhairi's shoulder. The chests are all identical, simple wooden coffers bound in bronze, but each one bears some writing in cursive script on the top.

"My Vudran is a bit rusty," says Vencarlo, "but let me see... from left to right, something about "a gentle touch", the middle one says, I think, "Death without, Life within". Or perhaps the other way around. And the one on the right ... "Breathe deeply your" ... hmm... could be "end" or perhaps "salvation""

Mhairi notes that the leftmost chest has a very faint sheen to it, as if it has an extra layer of varnish. Otherwise there is nothing else about the room that draws her eye as a possible trap. Except the whole set-up, of course.

Indicating the left hand chest, Mhairi says, "This one is too shiny. Like it was polished too hard, or it has a contact poison all over it. Can one of you talented magic types take a look? I don't know the slightest about magic..."

"As far as I can tell the gem is magical but the chests are not," says Ignatius. "I have a feeling I will one day be able to administer healing to poisonous afflictions, but unless it is in your bread or wine I cannot do much about it right now. Sorry."

"Here, you know better what you need, I'll hold the weight, you use the blade."
Edmond comes behind Mhairi and puts the blade of his weapon next to the chest, holding the heavy weapon by the end of the shaft.
