Drow - good for anything?

And considering how hard it is for casters to increase their saving throws (+1 is a feat), I wouldn't sneeze at it like you do.

fireball cast for 5d6 at 0 dc, or flame arrow for 2d6 at +1 dc. you decide!

Also, per DMG, a +2 con bonus is equal to a -2 int and -2 cha. It's logical that the reverse is true.

Nope.

Per the DMG (pg 173):

Con bonus = penalty to Dex or Int or Wis or Cha {see the standard dwarf +2 Con, -2 Cha for a core application of this rule}

Bonus to Int = penalty to Wis or Cha

Bonus to Cha = penalty to Int or Cha

Str Bonus = penalty to Dex or Con or Int and Cha or Int and Wis or Wis and Cha

Dex bonus = penalty to Str or Con or Int and Cha or Wis and Cha

Only bonuses to Str and Dex are balanced by a combination of penalties

What would people give up to reduce a drow LA to LA +1? That may be a solution for future supplements or house rules?

Players Guide to Faerun gives ways to handle LA races (making them non LA versions). (pages 170+.

They have a Lesser Drow there.

The WotC Savage Progression articles also gave ways to handle the LA progression of such races, including the drow. Base race (+0 LA) then 2 "class levels" to handle the rest {but they don't need to be taken in order, or at all (unlike Savage Species racial levels).

Friend of mine had Con -4 drow with an LA of 0. Would be hard to balance though if you have high point buy values or good dice rolling char generation.

Bliomey, but does he play it as a wizard/sorcerer, or a fighter, etc? I'd never play a Con -4 race with anything less than a d8 hit dice.

Doesn't matter as long as you put at least a 16 into Con.

I assume that your decision to offer the drow a spell that doesn't allow a saving throw was purposeful? Or did you just not read the spell? EDIT: Considering that Flame Arrow is a 3rd level spell that enchants 50 arrows to deal +1d6 fire damage with no save, I'd say you were relying on memory. Which proved inaccurate. /EDIT

Another comparison would be a Human's Hold Person compared to the Drow's Hideous Laughter, since both apply virtually the same effect. It's a wash: the Human, who has access to better spells really doesn't come out on top here.

Not acting or helpless? That's the same?

They both incapacate a foe.

Hold Person makes them helpless, but allows saves every round.

Hideous Laughter does not make them helpless, but guarantees that they will be out of the fight for a number of rounds.
