Edition wars! Games other than D&D

First Post
As noted in my other post of the day, one of my Players is about to run a Vampire: the Masquerade game for a break in my D&D campaign. The ST wants to run VtM instead of the new edition, Vampire: the Requiem. He doesn't like the new version.

So D&D is not the only game where folks can have edition wars. What other games do you play that you prefer an older edition to a newer/updated edition? Why don't you like the newer game?

I also play Shadowrun, which also has 3 editions. The interesting thing about SR is that everyone likes the newest version substantially more the others. The updated versions fixed things that the fans wanted.

- I love Paranoia XP and I think Mongoose did a terrific job with it, but I love 2nd edition more. Don't know why, just do.
- The first two editions of Gamma World are *vastly* superior to all subsequent editions, with 4th coming closest to the original two.

Ars Magica, for me more on supplements than the game itself. Though an amazing number of people hated AM 3.

Paranoia. There are those who play the older editions and those who like the newer one. I like 4th* myself... :p

Warhammer, though the war seems to be ending, there were those (including me( who could not stand the muchkin madness of WH 4 and 5, so stuck with 3. 6 is not as bad.

Warhammer 40K, mostly those who love the munchkin madness of WH 40K2, and those who call it Munchkin Madness... Not a lot of arguments between 3rd ed. and 4th.

* The existence of 4th Edition Paranoia has been labeled 'Classified', since you now have knowledge above your security clearance please report to Termination Chamber GRU 4, where you will sit in the Green chair. Thank you for your compliance.

Traveller has had plenty of edition wars. I personally prefer MegaTraveller, which was kinda the second edition of that game. I believe there have been broadly 6 or so (little black books, MegaTraveller, Traveller: The New Era, T4, GURPS Traveller, and now T20), but there are also subdivisions within each edition. I think MT had the cleanest rules set for character generation and task resolution, so I use those and that covers most of the playing time. I often use the LBBs for other rules (starship construction, for example - I like the focus on small ships in Book 2, versus the big ship focus in Book 5/MegaTraveller/more recent attempts).

Twilight: 2000 had two editions (and I think is getting a sourcebook-style update in the T20 line sometime); I prefer the first, combat seems grittier.

I don't play much GURPS, but when I do I use third edition - because I don't play it much, I see no need to invest in the new books.

Hero is on its 5th edition and there are occasional edition wars, but here I'm more or less up to date - I like FRED and the recent sourcebooks, they're top knotch stuff.

Paranoia has had at least (classified) editions, I always liked the first edition best, but Paranoia XP won me over, so I'm up to date here, too. Of course, all editions are perfect, XP is simply more perfect.

Not an RPG, but a science fiction wargame called Starfire had (and sometimes still has) some huge edition wars between the "3rd Edition Revised" players and 4th edition, or "Galactic Starfire" players. The timeline is convoluted such that 3rdR is the more recent ruleset, I believe. I prefer Galactic Starfire, has a more balanced R&D system, but it's a shame that the two are so polarized - Starfire has such a small player base to begin with.

Star Wars edition wars between the old WEG d6 system and the new d20 version can get heated...though I haven't seen too many of those in a while.
Very true. I'm generally for the newer game (D20), but I have years of nostalgia for the 2nd edition (revised and expanded) of D6 Star Wars.

I don't know of anyone who's really a D6 die hard, though...

Star Trek RPG has gone through several editions starting with FASA and moving to Last Unicorn and ending with Decipher (although supposedly Decipher intends to begin publishing supplements again). There is a lot of people that prefer the LUG version (ICON) but I think Decipher's CODA gives the game its truest feel.

Marvel Superheroes RPG is another one that has undergone edition wars, but I think you will find a strong consensus that the last version put out by Marvel themselves was a real stinker.
