From what I see here, most people prefer humans because of munchkin reasons. Figures. Humans are easy to RP because all of us(with some exceptions) ARE HUMAN. Elves, on the other hand, are not human (obviously) so it takes some effort to correctly RP them.

I strongly disagree by the assessment that anybody who plays as humans because they like the human's racial stats is a "munchkin". Wanting your character to be decent in combat is not munchkin behavior. Munchkin behavior is talking your DM into letting you play as a half-dragon, half-celestial Ninja of the Crecent Moon who wields a mercural greatsword. :D

Another thing to note is this: In previous editions D&D, elves were the race that munchkins always chose.

Also, elves aren't difficult to role-play. I've generally noted that elves tend to fall into 3 categories when role-played...

  • The arrogant, aloof elf who looks down on anyone who is a nonelf, even if they save his life.
  • The friendly, curious, innocent younger elf who gets along with just about everyone.
  • The brooding, dark hero. Of course, brooding dark heroes is one of the most tired sterotypes in roleplaying, since they appear no matter what the race.

I am currently playing an elf for the first time, and I wasn't exactly sure how to RP him, so I made him the stong, silent type(much like myself) with a general dislike for non-elves. This actually worked quite well for him, since his home was recently incinerated by an army of humans, mislead dwarves, and dark/demon elves. Now he's seething with hatred and rage, and he rarely speaks at all.

Was his wife killed by an ogre named Tazok, and is his name Kivan? ;)

j/k

EDIT: Added list of stereotypical elves.

I've heard this Kivan guy mentioned several times before in referance to Tazok. WHO IS THIS KIVAN GUY?!?!

Kivan is an NPC in Baldur's Gate 1 who can join your party. He's an elf ranger, good with bows, and he's very dark and brooding. His character portrait is the same picture you are using as your avatar. :)

elves or humans

sorry I gotta go with Dwarves too!:D

but between the elves and humans I prefer Humans in 3e
granted it's good to have an Elf in the group because they can detect secret doors more readily and they are immune to a ghouls touch,
but I enjoy "being human" myself.

Although,as stated, I prefer Dwarves!

They just rock!

I can't get the image out of my head of an armour wearing, winged cube wielding a morningstar, still it is better than an elf.

Oh my god,

I originally put this thread up to decide weather the human excels over the elf, and you guys come up with a Half-Celestial Gelatinous Cube cleric !!!!!

i have to disagree with Arani Korden , drow
have mass numbers,
are in league with devils and demons
have horrible torture techniques
and are just plain strong fast scum

They are the best out of all the elves.

Like I said before , Dwarves still rule so there !!!!!!!!!!!

Well that all depends. Generally I find humans to be a bit tough, I don't have time to roast them for hours prior to serving. Elves are great for snacks, I find Elf Rinds a particularly fortifying trail food. Quite honestly I prefer Halfling when I have the chance to sit down for a nice meal.

Maybe I'm spending too much time planning my Midnight campaign.

Well THAT explains a lot. I never met this Kivan guy in BG1, and I played through it at least 3 times. Where is he?
