Finding d16s (was: How Balanced are d16s?)

I have seen them for sale at game shops and at conventions - and never thought of them as more than a novelty - but now I am thinking they might work for a house rule of mine (knockdown) - so anyone here have them/use them?

Should I bother? Or they just novelties as I always thought?

I am not looking for some kind of scientific study - just your general experience with how well they roll.

Thanks.

Hey El! I have also used them (mainly to pick a random man on my Blood Bowl roster- to see who is going die/ ect.) & they seem okay to me as well. Thanks Maester Luwin

Mathematically speaking, they should work just fine, though it seems they would roll around a bit before stopping (and should spin really well, hehe).

They spin well. I find they roll about as much as a d10.

Had no idea they were being sold--I'm wondering if Dragon's Lair has them, I didn't see them last month...

I'm thinking there's bound to be a weapon or type of attack suitable for a 1d16...

1d16 is about the same as 2d8, so they'd be appropriate for a large bastard sword, or somesuch.

And as long as all of the faces are the same shape and meet at the same angle, I don't see why it wouldn't be fair. It's irregular stuff like the d7 or dimpled stuff like the d100 that you have to worry about.

You can make any fair dice by using a faceted spindle. You do not need a plutonic solid for a fair dice.

D7s, D9s, D51s, all can be done with spindles fairly. Its just that they take a long while to finish rolling once you get past a certain point.
