I kind of assumed they would be subsumed under "spear", much as different kinds of sword are bundled together under one "sword" category.

A spear is a long stabbing weapon. Aren't many polearms kind of like axes on long sticks?

"polearm" is a pretty broad category. I don't see why the specific subset of polearms that are primarily meant for thrusting is so special that it deserves to be its own category of weapons when all the other kinds get covered together.

Yes. Also hammers, hooks and "slashy" swords (as opposed to "stabby" swords).

In fact, "Like [weapon], only on a longer stick" describes a lot of polearms ...

What?

How do you figure that, given the emphasis on Heroic/Paragpon/Epic?

Heroic: Save the town, go into the dungeon.
Paragon: specifically mentioned saving the kingdom.
Epic: save the world.

What tier is "save the cheerleader?"

Re: archers and woodsmen being the same class.

Part of giving every class something it can do out of combat is picking exactly what it is you want that class to do out of combat.

Yes, criticism accepted. But I've given up all hope that 4E might halt the march toward player characters becoming arcane versions of Space Marines.

Buddy, it's been stated multiple times that fighters are not going to be arcane - the Races and Classes books + recent author blurbs have all been pointing to the fighter getting non-magical manoeuvres like the Bo9S classes.
More to the point, nothing in 3e or that we have heard of about 4e in any way resembles two-metres tall genetically engineered supersoldiers, with powered armour and BFGs.

Seriously, its difficult to imagine any type of warrior being less appropriate simile for anything in D&D that 40k marines!

Though D&D (or any rpg) would really be better with the addition of chainswords!!! ;)
