Gaze Attack question

Quick question, my PC died tonight and I just wanted to make sure that everything was kosher.

Situation:

Walked into a room full of bodaks, 4 on one side, 3 on the other. I began to cast a fireball on the side with 3 on it. I was Improved Invis (w/ Non-Detection). Should I have been forced to make 3 Fort saves?

Unless you avert or close your eyes, yes, though you should have been forced to make 7. If you're within range and you can see the bodak's eyes, meaning you don't avert or close your eyes, you must make a save. Your being invisible has nothing to do with it. Check out Gaze Attack in the DMG.

Sorry about your character, dude. If it makes you feel better, he'll continue on as another bodak.

Man that does truly suck. I was on the cusp of level 15 and ended up losing ~30,000 XP as a result. Thankfully, I will be resurrected by the party. The funny thing is, I always pester the party clerics to cast Death Ward on me. For some inexplicable reason, I didn't this time. Alas...

yep - if you are aware that it posesses a gaze attack - you must explicitly avert your eyes.

Thats nasty, you're bound to miss one of those rolls especially as a wizard. Funny thing is your DM was probably thinking it wouldn't be such a big deal because you'd likely have Death Ward up anyway.
Ah well. These things happen.
