Gender Inequality Issue...

Well, thank you all for your input, I'll discuss it with my players and see what they think about it after all as S'mon said, gender roles would be in character knowledge anyway. I'll post back and let people know how everything goes.

Four of his players are male, two are female. They are all playing characters of the sex that matches their own.

I'll have 4 male and 2 female characters (all played by players of the same gender),

You're probably right, I actually had to read it twice. That sentence is pretty unclear, it could be taken either way. The tip-off though is the sentence right after, which had me scratching my head for a few seconds. (If all his players are the same gender, then how can he have ... ooooooooooooh)

;D

Just gonna voice it one more time and then leave it. If you're going to have discrimination against minorities in your game-world, and members of that group are playing at your table, ask them ahead of time.
I don't know your friends personally and the risk of offending people is small, but this is the sort of thing that can ruin someone's day.

Yeah, sorry about that, it's not the most clear way I could of said that.

OK, in my world "all played by players of the same gender" means "all the players are the same gender". Thanks. :)

Same haha. My first point was going to be "things usually don't go well when players have opposite gendered PCs so you might want to address that first (or not)".

As far as the actual idea, I don't think it'll be too much of a problem, but you might have to play it back a little. Personally, and I can only speak for me, I tend to dislike when my fantasy game gets hunkered down by real life sociopolitical issues (especially ones that might cause undue tension).

In fact, it might be worth considering if you really want to risk that tension at all, if it really serves a purpose.

Maybe it does, who knows?

1) talk to the players about this. Adult or mature situations are fine but some people have petpeeves cause of RL issues. So make sure this isn't something that will really bug one of your players. I know I would personally not be happy if this was sprung on me as a player. If I knew ahead of time i would make a character concept to exploit the system. I mean the female characters should know how their gender is treated so it shouldn't be a surprise.

2) Play up the pro side of things. While women might not be seen as equal, there are benefits to that. Just like in RL. Give the female characters social bonuses to talk there way out of bad situations or past guards. I mean if men don't see them as equal they are less likely to see that as a danger.

Yes, definitely talk it over with players beforehand. It's not really a matter of maturity here; sometimes (particularly if the players -are- the minority you're hitting) the reaction is "I deal with this #*@$( in real life; I want to do something different in a game," and you -don't- want to be surprised by this (or them to be surprised by it). Particularly since as described, it's a background detail, so it's not like it's going to be a surprise to their characters (unless they're travellers, I guess).

That said, it sounds like fun, and it sounds like you're going in the right direction; not messing with the mechanics, but applying situational bonuses based on adherence to gender role. This is the kind of thing that -could- work very well, producing a nice "alienation" feeling that helps the group form a sense of place that's different from the real world, and in general, I enjoy of addressing (rather than simply emulating) issues like this.

I know it has already been said several times, but I think as long as you discuss that part of your world with your players, then you can get a clear answer based on their opinions.

As a female player, I would have little issue with it. I love to roleplay, and I would not mind working with it. In fact, it would be fun. I could then think more about that part of society as it pertains to my character. Does she accept it and act weak willed, struggling with knowing that she has a great power that she should use to help the world? Does she need the encouragement and support of her party members to finally blossom and express herself? Has she fought against it at every turn? Has she succeeded against the odds and sticks it to the men? :p
