All the people calling it "math" makes me want to cry [emoji14]I agree with what you're saying.
At least, I think I do. You really could clarify whose math that makes you want to cry...

Are you talking home-brewed solutions now? That doesn't negate my point.Dual wield is solved with putting offhand attack into same Attack Action with mainhand attack.
Longsword(sword&board style) is not the DPS choice. It's defense choice. Although halforc champion with longsword can be nice-and-simple DPS with lots of damage.

And who are you to tell me the longsword is a defensive choice. I'd like the longsword to be a perfectly viable choice for a damage dealer wielded zorro style with the other hand free, thank you very much.
Same as dagger throwing, spearchucking, hammer using or anything else really.
Any time the game needlessly constricts the weapons menu it is poorer because of it.

One of the thing I find sad with these "optimal builds" is how narrow and specific they are. And there aren't that many of them either. There is a *very large* number of "okay-ish to decent" builds you can have, but only a few of these twink ones. It's narrowing the game's scope.

Putting the dual wield attack as part of the attack action is a major buff to 1 particular style of ranger or a multiclassed fighter warlock or any rogue.
Now it's you that is homebrewing.Yes, I'm afraid that for some things homebrew is good if it fixes something without breaking the game.
Also, having a free hand(unless you need to climb, grapple, hold a torch or something) in a combat is stupid.
Also zorro's damage comes from him being some 15+ level fighter/rogue multiclass not the sword only [emoji14]
There is a reason why dagger is d4 damage. Dont bring a dagger to pole-ax fight.
Dagger has it's place. You cannot hide a great-ax under coat, nor you can shoot a bow while climbing, or swing a mace in tight tunnel.
Which is why the -5/+10 mechanism needs to be abolishedIn any game with meaningful choices there will be best and worst choices. The goal is to have the best choices not be so much better than many of the other choices that they are the only reasonable choice.
it's a buff. Not a major one.
But even if it is, TWF is crappiest style to begin with so a buff is needed.
