GREYHAWK CY 576: GREAT LEGENDS RETOLD -- CAMPAIGN THREAD

Tellerian Hawke

Defender of Oerth
GM:
Knowing that the magic doesn't target individual creatures, instead relying on a center point and affecting a 10 ft. radius burst, Sphynx centers his spell on the barricade, knowing that the Kobolds are just on the other side of it, concealed by the smoke.

Sleep DC 16: Kobold saves: 6, 16, 16 (two fails, one resist)
Hit Die limit is reached with the first Kobold.
Of the three Kobolds, only one falls asleep.

Sphynx, you can sense that your spell did indeed work, although you could also sense that these Kobolds have a stronger life force than the others you've encountered. You know for certain that you only affected one of the three. Nonetheless, one less foe is one less foe.

GM: Kobold Actions:

Behind the wall of smoke, cries of alarm are heard; followed by scuffling sounds, and then, further in the distance, the muted sounds of someone knocking on a door.

An arrow zings forward out of the smoke, aimed in a harmless direction. It skips harmlessly off the wall and clatters to the ground. More cursing in the Draconic language can then be heard.

Quixt: It's your turn! What do you do?

Quixt:
Moving quickly into position 20 feet ahead, he follows the shadows of Sphinx’s sunrod down the corridor using the Southern most wall as his guide, careful to avoid hitting his mates.
As he moves he draws his bow and launches an arrow a few inches above where the incoming arrow pierced the smokestick’s billow.

Attack 1d20+5 = 24; Damage: 4

Alas, Quixt, you hear your arrow clink against the far wall, having missed its intended target completely.

GM:
Nimbar's DC for Sleep: DC 15
Kobold: (19) - Saved

Nimbar does the same thing as Sphynx, popping another Sleep spell onto the barricade, but he knows instantly that the spell has failed.

Kobold Voice: "I am not as weak-minded as Grak was, you insufferable finger-wag!"

Hawke says, "I'll put you to sleep the old fashioned way, you little fleabag! VICTORY FOR THE BRAVE! BOW DOWN TO THE MIGHT OF THOR!!"

GM: Hawke is raging.

Having said this, Hawke rushes boldly down the hall, charging the barricade itself, since he cannot see what's behind it.

GM:
Charging Distance: 60 ft.
Makeshift barricade: Hardness 3, Hit Pts 25, AC 5.
Hawke's attacks with Whirling Frenzy & Charge & Pounce: 3 Primary, 1 Off-Hand
Attack Rolls: 19,27,25,18; Damage Rolls: 15, 10, 11, 6; Adjusted: 12, 7, 8, 3
Total Damage To Barricade: 30 pts. Barricade is destroyed.
Kobold Reflex Save (DC 10) to avoid flying debris: (11) = Saved. (Half damage)
Damage (1d4+3): 7 pts. (Half damage = 3 pts.)

Kobold #1: 3 damage. (Slightly bruised.)

Hawke charges the flimsy wall, and makes short work of it, tearing it apart like an angry child kicking over a sand castle. A yelp of surprise is heard within the cloud of smoke, as a Kobold is struck by flying debris.

Round 2 of Combat:

ORDRED: The smoke is beginning to clear! By the end of this round, it will be gone. You still can't see the Kobold clearly, although Hawke might soon be able to do so, since he's closer. What do you do?

GM: NOTE: Detailed combat map coming soon.

Ordred stares with some surprise at the savage ferocity displayed by Hawke pulverizing the barricade with his hammers. ~My my, he really knows how to smash things!~

Ordred charges into the smoke, dropping the sunrod on the tunnel floor a few paces away from the barricade [Free Aaction] snatching up his morning star again [Readied weapon as part of move action] prepared to attack whichever Kobold is still standing.

Breakdown of Smoke Stick:
From the book:
"...This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when ignited. The smoke fills a 10-foot cube (treat the effect as a Fog Cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally."

So the way I do it is:
1. During the round you use it, the smoke stick creates the cloud, and burns itself out. The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can’t use sight to locate the target).

2. The following (2nd) round, the smoke is already starting to dissipate. (A simple device such as this DOES NOT have the duration of a second level spell!) At the beginning of the second round, figures in the smoke appear dark and shadowy; they are targetable by spells and special actions (like Charge) but details cannot be seen; by the end of the second round, the smoke is thin enough to no longer hamper vision at all.

Basically, a smokestick is a temporary distraction, which allows a round's worth of actions, typically things like taking cover, advancing, or retreating.

ALSO: I might revisit this, and make the duration longer than a single round. I will have to think about it. But I stand by my assertion that its duration will NOT approach that of the actual spell.

Ordred charges Kobold #1; by the time Ordred reaches him, he can see him clearly. It's an easy thing, at the running pace of a charge action, for Ordred to side-step his friend (Hawke,) step over the debris of the destroyed barricade, and meet the Kobold head-on. Upon closer inspection, Ordred notes that the Kobold is wearing well-made leather armor (not masterwork, but not the typical, humanoid slop, either,) and carrying (on his back) the signature weapon of the Dragonspine Kobolds: a masterwork Rose Gold spear!

GM:
Kobold AC: 18
Charge Attack: (11) = Miss

Ordred is surprised at the Kobold's girth, strength, and prowess; without dropping his bow, the Kobold side-steps Ordred's charge, and kicks the Dwarf in his left hip, knocking him out of position, and causing him to miss. The kick is more of a push than a real kick, a defensive maneuver indicative of a highly-trained warrior; in Ordred's mind, this does not bode well.

NOTE: Sleeping Kobold (2) is now green, to mark his condition.

Sphynx moves between Nimbar and Quixt, forward enough to close some distance but not so far as to interfere with the timing of his intention. As he moves, he draws upon the magical energies as he understands them, stopping his forward motion, and flicking both hands forward to point with the first two fingers of each hand at the, now, visible kobold. Two shards of light race from his extended fingers toward the kobold.

Sphynx's spell causes Kobold #1 an immense amount of searing pain, as the two shards of light slam into him; however, to Sphynx's astonishment, the Kobold remains standing, although he has seen better days!

GM: Kobold #1: 7 pts. damage. (+3 from before) = 10 pts. damage total.

GM:
Kobold #1 drops his bow (Free Action)
Kobold #1 draws his spear as part of a move action (Move Action)
Kobold #1 does not actually move from his square.
Kobold #1 attacks Ordred: (22) = Hit.
Kobold #1 Damage: 7 pts.

Knowing that it is useless to pursue the foe who enspelled him from a distance, Kobold #1 turns his attention to Ordred instead; dropping his bow, and drawing a short, iron-headed half-spear, which glistens with hundreds of tiny, golden sparkles, the Kobold thrusts it at Orded, catching the dwarf off-guard, and managing to gouge him in the same shoulder that had been previously struck by the arrow. It is not a vital blow, but it is nevertheless a painful one; Ordred winces, a look of anger flashing across his face, as he endures the pain of injury.

Kobold #2 continues to sleep.

Kobold #3 continues banging on the door, yelling in Draconic!

K3: "Intruders! Open the door! Protect the chieftain! Release the hound!"

CURRENT INITIATIVE COUNT:
Ordred: 21
Sphynx: 18
Kobolds: 17
Quixt: 13
Nimbar: 9
Hawke: 7

Kobold #1 is moderately injured. (10 pts.)
Kobold # 2 is asleep.
Ordred is significantly injured. (9 pts.)

Quixt:
Frustrated by the low-level of light, and unsure of the fight in front of him, Quixt moves up 30' and notches another arrow, releasing it toward the Kobold attacking their newly met dwarf. The arrow misses wildly over the kobold's head, ricocheting against the wall behind him, ruining the projectile in the process. He curses silently his poor shooting, resolving to improve it in the future. Hearing the kobold's epithets and cries for help, he barks in dwarvish to Ordred, "Fall back, comrade! More of them are coming from in front of you!"
