Halflings - What's the Attraction?

Tieflings good racial power but halfling and half elves seem really sucky.

Halflings get bonuses to the two most primary attributes if you're a rogue who rely on charisma (artful dodger) and they get bonuses to the most roguish skills. Second chance can be a life-saver, forcing your opponents to reroll their critical hit or similar.

Generally I compare Half-Elves a lot to Dwarves. No classes (except Warlock) rely on Constitution, but healing surges and extra hit points are definitely nice. They are then good choices for classes that use charisma as one of their primary scores. Therefore Half-Elves are arguably the best race for Warlock, at least a Star Pact Warlock or one who will not take all powers in their chosen pact, but will also take a few from the others. The bonus to both charisma and constitution makes them suited for all of the Warlock pacts though. The extra power from another class is a nice bonus that allows the half-elf to keep a surprise ready for when the opponent least expects it. The ability to take human, elf and half-elf only feats is pretty okay.

+2 dex.

The elf encounter power is pretty good once you realise that the way to use it is to reroll missed daily abilities.

the lost in the crowd feat is pretty awesome, flavorwise and mechanically.

+2 to AC is a lot.

Why would anyone choose to play a halfling?

It all stems back to grade school, 3rd grade to be exact, when I first read The Hobbit, and first started playing D&D.

Back then, I was the runt. I was the shortest, smallest, weakest kid in class... I identified with halflings, and so halfings were the first character I played in D&D. Even after eventually growing into a very average-sized adult, they're still one of my favorite races to play.

Humans suck

Halfling > Human

An extra feat in 4e is not as powerful as an extra feat in 3.5.

Which extra at-will power do you need? I read through all the classes I could only see myself needing 2/4. I think cleric I wanted 3/4, but dwarves get stat bonuses in line with cleric better than humans. And they don't get pushed around ;)

Second Chance is awesome.

Wizards can use every At-Will power they can get. Thus, Human Wizards are quite nice.

Also, if you plan on multiclassing at Paragon Tier, Humans get two At-Wills from 1st-level class and one from '11th level' class. Combine that with the extra feat you get to take a multiclass option to 'start the ball rolling', and it's pretty clear that Humans are some of the best multiclassers.

I do think that as more At Will options are released for the various classes, we'll see the human bonus At Will become more and more attractive. That said, I think halflings are a race that definitely holds it own. Second Chance is a great racial ability.

With the Defensive reroll and feats like Lost in the Crowd, I think that halflings have the potential to be really tough Fighters. I'm building a halfling that really focuses on wading in against a ton of enemies and gets as many OAs as possible. I think it's going to be fun.

well i played the halfling paladin in both PREV mods and the re-roll was just an awesome ability (and annoyed the GM no end)

mark them, force them to attack your pretty good AC, then hit and you make them re-roll. excellent IMO.
