I think d20M appeals to a niche group of gamers. I know I can't convince anyone in my group to give it a try, which is pretty annoying. (snip)

I know what you mean. We at 12 to Midnight have experienced the same thing. One of our guys wrote a great tournament module called Weekend Warriors. At the two cons we've run it at, the first day we literally had to grab people from the hall to make a table. (Granted, part of that was because most people were there specifically for RPGA games.) Almost without execption, none of them had ever tried d20 Modern.

However, by the second day word of mouth from early players had spread and we ended up adding extra tables to meet demand. So don't give up. Once you pester your friends into trying it, they'll probably change their tune.

The problem I have, is with my work schedule the way it is, I am somewhat forced to play online. Now, that's not a BAD thing, since I'm a MUCH better GM online (PbP), than I am in person (one of the benefits of playing online, I can spend 5 minutes to think before I post, and the players never notice).

The problem though is, if it's not fantasy, I have a HARD time finding quality players. That, and with D20 modern not tied to anything, I have a hard time deciding WHAT to play/run *grin*.

First off, sorry, but I've never done play-by-post, wouldn't know where to begin.

[Obligatory garyh PbP pimping]Check the PbP FAQ linked in my sig for more info on PbP gaming![/Obligatory garyh PbP pimping]

I'd have mentioned this sooner, but I was travelling with no internet access this past weekend. :)

I was really pumped, until it came out.

I don't know why, it never clicked with me, and the rest of my group *hates* it. They love spaycraft though. they hate the modern fantasy theme that seems to roar through the whole text. When the gnoll pimp page was turned to, there was silence in the group, and then I heard books closing.

They also really hate the classes. As a GM I appreciate what the intention was, but as a player, they are just NOT exciting. They wanted to see classes like Soldier, Cat burglar, Hacker, PI, anything but what they found.

They have issues with D20M's method of autofire, but that is pretty common.

And no one was quite sure about the wealth system. The voters are still out.

The magic system was to close to DnD for them too.

We loved the allegiance system though, and even converted it to use in fantasy.

That said, the D20M is one of the least used books in my massive collection, used only for a short lived RIFTS conversion.

Things I like about d20 Modern.

1. Convertablitiy...with some work...well with alot of work..you can come up with a Pulp game, a Near future game, or just about what ever you want.

Things I don't like about d20 Modern.

1. The classes. I hate the idea of having to go a few levels in a class before you can take the class you really want. It's like the "real" classes are mini prestige classes. I just don't like it.

2. The weath system. It stinks.

3. Having to work alot to do a conversion to the game you really want to run.

4. Throwing D&D creatures into a modern setting. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Things I like about d20 Modern:
  • Easy to use for any genre with a minimum of fuss. Just delete a few skills, work up a few quick occupations if necessary -- and you're good to go.
  • Generic classes that aren't archetypes -- build the freakin' character you want, not pick from a handful of options the game designers tell you that you have to want!
  • Right combination of cinematic and gritty -- at least for me.
  • Alternate rules like allegiance and wealth. Although, frankly, I typically handwave wealth/money in any game system and typically also do away with alignment, so the allegiances aren't quite the breakthrough for me they seem to have been for some.
  • Familiar and transparent mechanics. It's like D&D without being D&D. Which, unfortunately brings me to...
Things I don't like about d20 Modern:
  • What the heck is with the "D&D in the modern world" vibe? Blech! The entire F/X chapter is dead to me! (Although to be fair, I've taken the concept of the Occultist as the only type of magic and applied it even beyond d20 Modern.)
  • Subdual damage, or whatever they called it in Modern. I immediately canned it in preference of 3e style subdual damage, 'coz it's so much better.
  • No interesting settings out yet. Granted, I don't really need them, and I hardly ever play settings "out of the box" anyway, but if there were something more like Delta Green, Conspiracy X or Dark*Matter out there, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat and I expect it'd enrich our games tremendously.

I wasn't that impressed with the class system... I was at first but after I started my major campaign and we where starting on the 9th level and such it came to be a major handicap to have 5 different classes. (Something like fast/tough/strong/solider/gunslinger) but I lived with it for a while and then I discovered the classless system of M&M and I would be hard pressed to go back. I have Spycraft coming in the mail (FRP Games) and I hear that you can do the same with a lot fewer classes.

I still like the classes! :) Then again, we don't tend to play long campaigns with multiple levellings, so maybe we haven't really stretched the system enough.

But we have also tended to be more focused and only have levels in one or two classes, including advanced classes.

I really like the way the classes work (closest thing to classless I've seen outside of the truely class-free M&M). I'd like to see d20 Modern-style fantasy-ized, if that makes sense (even though I like 3.5 and AU, more options are always good).

I did NOT want to see d20 Fantasy modernized. I'll echo that I REALLY don't care for the fantasy assumptions in the game. Look, we HAVE stats for gnolls. Give me stats for Greys or Bigfoot (I hear those are in the Menace Manual, which is good, but they should have been in the core book). I don't even care if you file off the serial number of a bugbear, slap "Yeti" on the header and give it new art. It's a matter of atmosphere.
