And that is a poor assumption. I would argue that a small section of monsters in the monster manual get the majority of play at tables. There are dozens of dragons, but I certainly don’t use them all in every single campaign.

Equating that a complex subject that requires a lot of words to explain with its commonality of use is a poor assumption, especially in the face of so many tables that report combat lite dnd experiences

Can you run a combat light 5e game? Certainly! Can it be a lot of fun? Most definitely. I just can't for the life of me think of any reason why you'd choose 5e over a broooooooooad swath of other systems when choosing to play that kind of game aside from familiarity/name recognition. It'd be like running a Cyberpunk game with 5e rules, sure you could do it but why?

Beyond the Wall is a great game.

I'm in agreement about the 2024 edition. It pushed too far in a direction that is grating on me. Too many obstacles removed for players, which is cutting down on tricky choices, or nail biters.

How can you pull a potion out of your bag, open it and down the contents as a bonus action?

Yeah, and things like Surprise now just giving you advantage on initiative and how abstract all the summons have become. It's like they're purposely stripping out the remaining Combat as War elements of the game while still not being as good at Combat as Sport kind of combat as 4e. 5e's greatest strength was being everyone's second choice so it was a good compromise between people who wanted different things. 5.5e takes some steps away from that, not big ones, it's not much different, I'd still play 5.5e games if a good friend were running them, but why pay money for something that's taking a few small steps away from what I want?

The vague possibly false hope there will be any actual improvements worth the effort to bring into my games, and a long-standing philosophical preference for running games--especially if I open my tables to new players--that are in print.
Have you considered Level Up? It's definitely still in print.

As of this post, 50% of the responses were going to buy this and still will, but the comments are majority negative/no. I'm sure that's called a reverse ratio and explains the current state of conversation in D&D circles.
Let me explain why am still going to buy:

Expectations: I was expecting am incremental improvement on the whole and from what I've seen, that is what we're getting based on the sly flourish review.

Playability: I play and DM at my FLGS using a 'adventurers league' format. I will get this to the table.

Cost: I have an embarassing about of store credit. The only this will cost is space and time to read.

Since my Age of Worms campaign is coming to an end over the next few weeks, we’re looking at diving in and trying out parts of 2024D&D when we start up the next campaign.

What edition are you running it in? One of my DMs is finishing up Shackled City and I think they would like to do Age of Worms. We're playing in 5E so it would need an update.

If Deception, Intimidation, Performance and Persuasion were folded up into a single skill, Influence would probably be the name of said skill. As all four skills were designed to influence others in and outside of Combat.

As for weapon masteries, I tend to think Combat Traditions and Combat Maneuvers would work better for a character.
Agreed. It also has a huge amount of design space.
