D&D General How do I build Crystar in D&D?

Dragonhelm

Knight of Solamnia
Back in the 80s, there was a comic book series called The Saga of Crystar: Crystal Warrior. It lasted for 11 issues and was known for having a toy tie-in.

The short version is that in the kingdom of Crystalium was ruled by two princes - Crystar and Moltar. They were given a choice between following Order or Chaos. Through the events of the comic, Crystar and his followers become crystal people while Moltar and his Magma Men become Magma people.

So how would one build Crystar in D&D?

Would he be a better player character or NPC?

Where could you put him in the D&D multiverse?

Art below for reference. First piece is by Gazbot. The others are by Bob Larkin.

EDIT: Added artists' names.

I'd use a custom lineage from Tasha's. He's from a prime world with a strong connection to the Elemental Planes of Earth and Fire.

Also, I had no idea that it was a Marvel-owned brand. That's wild. They were doing a lot of great toy-related comics then, so it makes sense that they'd give making their own toy line a try.

If I were to do this as a playable race I'd look at warforged as a basis. Not surprisingly I'm not familiar with their abilities though. For NPCs, there are various constructs that could be used for inspiration.

I bet Bob Larkin was one of the artists. Anyway, my Crystar had one special ability: putting a cool little helm on his crystal head. I wouldn't devote a species/class to that. It would be a can of worms if I used him as an NPC, but I might let a PC get away with it.

He should be a human paladin. His crystal physiology is basically armor.

It's funny, because a friend of mine used Crystar in his old game back in 2e and statted him up as a paladin.

He's the main character, so he should be a PC.

:)

On the planet world of Crystalium which I assume is a Material Plane world.

I had considered the idea of Crystalium being a part of the elemental plane of earth or just some land in some other setting. I hadn't considered just making it its own world. :)

I would tend to make him a NPC and put both of them at odds with the PCs being caught in between their fight. As NPCs, I can give them and cool power I wanted, but likely base something off aasimar or just take an elemental monster. If a players wanted to play it, I think it would be based on the aasimar as well. I do like the warforged idea as well though.

Yeah, I posted that in a hurry and didn't look at the obvious watermark. Oops!

So you played Crystar? How did that go?
