How do like your PDFs?

My 2 cents

If forced to pick, side bookmarks are the way. In-line is okay in certain areas, but the lack of a "back" button like you might have in a browser is annoying at best, and you can get very lost in some larger pdfs.

Not sure if you are famaliar with our company, but most of the work we do is all full color. There will be a printer friendly version included with little to no art.

Yep, quite familiar, in fact. I love Denizens of Avadnu (I was one of the ENnie judges who nominated it last year), and I'm eagerly awaiting the Primer. I talked with someone at GenCon for a while about what you were planning on doing next, it may have been you I spoke with.

Glad to hear that you will be including printer friendly versions, that can sometimes be a deal breaker for me on PDFs.

Side bookmarks. Links in the TOC are not so useful, since its structure is usally about the same as the side bookmarks, but links in the INDEX rock! (you did include an index, right :) )

I think I'm the only human being on the face of the planet who doesn't like too many bookmarks. They end up getting in the way of themselves and I can't find what I want.

Not alone. I'm totally in agreement. Too many bookmarks is as bad as none. It matters not one iota if there's a bookmark to the exact topic you want if you have to sort through almost as much text in the bookmarks area.

My "sweet spot" would be to have the bookmark bar act as an interactive table of contents, with in-line references (see page XX) as in-line bookmarks/links. An index in the back with in-line links would be great, too.

Too many PDF authors seem to want to try to re-invent the wheel. I'm already used to working with books. What they do, they do rather well. Just use PDF features to build on what's there, not replace them.

Why don't you have a "back" button? Don't all versions of the Reader have a "back" button?

Oh, and I prefer both bookmarks and hyperlinks...and lots of both.

Another question on PDFs as I'm just about done with some new product (yay!). On bookmarks, do you prefer the slideout bookmarks menu or do you prefer inline hyperlinks in the books actual table of contents? Or do you prefer both? Trying to figure out what the best way to go is and I wanted some opinions.

Thanks!

Both. Definitely, without reservation or hesitation, both. I buy lots and lots of PDFs and I favor the guys who do this for me. Voting with my wallet, so to speak.
