how many are using the new power cards

We are using the Character Builder for character management, which delivers customized Power Cards. I see no use at all for these new Power Cards in our groups.

The dreaded ditto post.

I can't see any value added with this cards which are static and never changing as opposed to the DDI which is updated (as of now) on a fairly regular basis and contains all the material one needs.

While I think I may in someways regret buying them for some strange reason I'm finding it a lot easier to read powers of a class on the cards then from the books. Probably because I'm used to doing so for other games. I don't know if I will buy anymore in the future, but worse case is I will at least be able to understand the first 8 classes much better than I did before.

6-7 months ago these were a 'must buy' for me.

Then the character builder came out and I have no need for them. I can certainly see why others would want them though and they will probably be a solid seller for WotC.

Quick Question

A question for those of you who make your own cards, do you have a symbol file or font or something that has all the cool symbols for attacks? Ya know, the sword in circle, arrows radiating outward, etc.

I know I won't be buying these. Until recently I used the online powercards at 4epowercards.com but after that site closed I took the time to learn how to use the MSE and make my own. However recently I discovered a site, here... DnDItalia by dragonslair.it :: Power Card Creator that makes nice looking powercards online and free.

I gave my players the link and when/if we start playing 4e again they will make their own decks up for their characters. This also has the added benefit of them actually becoming more familiar with their powers.

I lost all interest in the official cards after seeing how ugly they are. Had they been pretty I might have bought them, but now other alternatives seem more appealing.

I kinda like the CB ones, though they are not so pretty either (but don't cost me extra $s). But I have trouble with the text scaling, every now and then the font size is far too big to fir on the card. I hope they fix that soon.

Dozens of hours of work to make them yourself? You have a different definition of "better" than I do!

I have to agree. Especially since we're in a "rotating DM one-shot" phase, and doing that every single week would get old really fast.

I'm a big fan of things which mean less work for me.

Well I work the graveyard shift, and in my down times I've been building the cards. Last night I finished, the Bard cards, and got a good way through the Avenger, leaving me the Avenger to complete tonight and the shaman, and I will once again, have a card for every power.

And it's easy to just print them out and away we go.

The thing is, if we were talking about one shots, or just short term gaming, I would only print out the cards, so I was essentially building a set as it were for a class.

As they don't go to waste, and can be used again, and thus save reprinting them out.

And generally, no I wouldn't think it would be a good way to use time normally. But when your in a place for 8 hours at a pop, with only bursts of work to interrupt you, the rest of the time you have to wait for something to happen, well.. this gives me stuff to do during the down time as it were. (I've already got the campaign for our weekly game all set up and for that, I've also gone about working on making things modular for my games as well, with monsters. I take a monster, and run it up through the levels, that will likely be encountered, i.e. 5 above and below, and when I need more, it's easy to go to the base unit, and find the last level I had done with them and up it from there. And I've got a library of them also, formatted so I can just copy them into a open office excel sheet, and run an ecounter with all the opponents, and round tracking and hp tracking as well right there on the screen. You would be amazed at how much all these little things save time for gaming.)

I used to, initially, then realized they just didn't fit the style I was making, so I stopped using them. But I've seen stuff like it back in the early days.
