Just based on spell school wouldn't be granular enough, IMO. It should be a list of specific spells.Abjuration and Evocation magic like that in the Eldritch Knight subclass? Personally I like this version of the subclass: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-MDt9Rta4SHLK7oAJzbf It allows you to pick any two Wizard schools of magic and gain a particular benefit from those schools.
Consensus? I don't even think it's the majorityI don't know how much it benefits Wizards, given that the consensus around Bladesinger seems to be "You're still primarily a caster, act like it, and only use weapon attacks if forced to."
This is how I've seen every Bladesinger run in the game. The Swordmage is as comfortable in melee combat as the Fighter, and as close and personal as the Barbarian, but the weapon of choice is pure magic.
Paralyzer, Rotting Wounds, Vampric Blade, Fear on Impact... let me consult the literature.Besides Air Cutter, Teleport Slash, Swap Places, Elemental Strike, Elemental Burst...
What other spells do you think need to be made?
I think it feels better with d10, but then I also think it should be a half-caster, an arcane counterpart of the paladin and ranger and it should have a tougher base hit die than the artificer. The Swordmage feels better with a d8 hit dice.
Its tankiness comes from magical hit points, from regenerating and healing. And its AC is magical, force armor rather than plate armor, or it turns into metal rather than wears metal.
For the half-caster concept, I would rather a Paladin subclass swap its spell list for the Wizard spell list, similar to the way the Divine Sorcerer swaps its spell list.I think it feels better with d10, but then I also think it should be a half-caster, an arcane counterpart of the paladin and ranger and it should have a tougher base hit die than the artificer.
