Something else that will have a narrow gap is the HP themselves, between defenders and controllers. If we assume (and this isn't the only interpretation of the pre-gen characters, btw) Defenders get a fixed 6 HP/level, and Controllers get a fixed 4 HP/level (with no constitution modifiers, as seems to be implied by the Rogue article), then...
Assume 4 points difference for initial Con Score (12 vs 16 Con) to level 1, and 5 points by class (Defender base 15, Controller base 10) for 9 HP
Level 1 gap: 11 HP
Level 10 gap: 29 HP
Level 20 gap: 49 HP
Level 30 gap: 69 HP
In 3.5e, assuming wizard con 12, fighter con 16, and an average 2.5 HP/level wizard and 5.5 HP/level for the fighter, + Con bonus the gaps are...
(rounded down)
Level 1 gap: 5
Level 10 gap: 50
Level 20 gap: 100
My guess is that with so many more creatures to fight in an encounter the controllers are more likely to get smucked once in a while, so the gap isn't as big as it was in 3.5e
