D&D 5E [IC] Against the Slavelords

Brak Blood-Bear, 5th Level Barbarian

Once light was produced, Brak joined the others at the cave mouth. He returned his javelin to the case on his back and took his greataxe in two hands, ready for a fight.

As the group prepared to enter, Levanna held out her forearm. A black oval that distorted reality around its edges appeared above her, out of which a hawk of brown feathers with iridescent tips flew out. It landed on her arm and peered at each of the party in turn.

"Ciymthrax, watch this cave entrance. If any creature approaches, fly in, follow my chalk markers, and tell us," Levanna said to her familiar from the Feywild.

The hawk seems to nod to the young wizard and the group heads into the cave. The entrance itself is at least fifteen feet across and almost ten feet high. It quickly dips down deep into the earth and the group gets the strong scent of wet damp cold air with just the hint of death... a slightly rotten meat smell.

The tunnel levels off after descending fifteen feet or so and opens into a large cave. The light from Levanna's magic reveals at huge furry form sleeping on one end of this cave maybe thirty feet away from where the party is standing. A half-eaten elk carcass lying nearby.

Evendur and Cedric both get a strong sense that the bear is not asleep and is in fact awake and simply "faking it"...

Day 2/Midday

Tirion stopped at the entrance to the cave and stared at the large bear asleep in the cavern. Well, there was a bear. Now what did they do? It hadn’t attacked anyone except orcs.

The bear suddenly rolls over and stands on all four... its massive, taller at the shoulders then Brak is standing fully erect. Standing on its hind legs its head would bump into the ceiling of the cave twelve feet above. There is a low growl that comes from the bear and it tenses but does not attack. Instead it starts making powerful sniffing sounds, testing the air maybe...

When the cave was illuminated and the sleeping bear revealed, Levanna froze. Tirion was correct. She had no ill will towards this bear, yet they were intruding on its lair.

Levanna backed away as the bear stirred, moving towards the rear of the party and tried to ignore the fear rising in her.

"Can you understand me? We do not intend harm..." she said, trying to keep her voice non-threatening. She looked about the cave for signs of abnormality.

GM: Levanna is sure that this is just a normal cave, and there is nothing here that would indicate that the bear is sentient. She is also pretty sure the bear has only been here for the day... some other animals were probably living here before but ran off when the bear showed up.
Anyone can make an insight or nature check if they want...

The bear looks at Levanna but makes no appearances to understanding her. It simply grows again deep in its throat and looks menacing.

“That...is a big bear…” Tirion murmured as Levanna backed away. Tirion wanted to, as well, but felt he should keep his heavily armored form between the bear and the others in case the creature attacked. Perhaps this hadn’t been such a good idea.

“Easy, calm,” Tirion said, keeping his voice level, his eyes on the bear. “We followed you here from the orc slaughter, concerned about the farmers in the area.”

Kelvyn Human Rogue

Once more the Rogue tries to look harmless, but he does keep a hand on the haft of his crossbow. "Um, I don't think we have any reason to tangle with this bear. If we don't see some sign that the bear understands us, I think we need to back out slowly" He examines the bear for some sign of the unusualness he observed in the bear in the pit.

Brak Blood-Bear, 5th Level Barbarian

Brak doesn't really understand what's going on at the moment. He just holds his axe, preparing to attack the bear if it attacks.
