One near miss was so near, that it left a mark, though one that was not life-threatening.

OOC: So Viarar will take 9 damage, then. With everyone having a hard time hitting, it MIGHT actually be a good idea to try to sunder the armour's shield I'm not sure what would be best.[/b]

Tommi lobs another stone at the creature Orb5 is distracting, and it lands a resounding hit. "Thanks, li'l buddy," he says, realizing he has invested more into Orb emotionally since its help at the gate than he had ever done before.

He reaches into his pocket, and breathes into three more pebbles.

Lionel sets his sight again on the animated armour. The armour paused for a second and looked up at Lionel, its red glowing eye locked into Lionel's. At that moment, Lionel and let the bolt loose and it flew straight through the visor and hit the red glowing eye.
Lionel quickly shot off another bolt but in his excitement the bolt missed.

Vairar changed his tactics - with more than half of the attacks pinging off shields of the constructs, he targets the shield directly. On the construct that deflected his last thrust the pike directly into the shield, hitting its bullseye center. With customary sonic effect for the thunder priest, the shield vibrates on the armored construct's arm.

One detail for target the shield: should it have separate AC (I mean, the plate armor doesn't help the shield) - if it is metal shield, it could actually have plate level AC, but probably not SHIELD AC as extra protection

I separated the rolls for damage since I don't know if the booming blade counts.

Excellent damage rolls!
The shield takes 19 damage from Shatterpike (plus additional 8 thunder damage if booming blade counts for the object hit)
Hit on Animated Armor 2 so potentially easier target for Angis
_: 1D20+6 = [19]+6 = 25
1D20+6 = [20]+6 = 26
1D10+3 = [8]+3= 11

Crit bonus: 1D10 = [8] = 8
Booming blade; damage on moving: 1D8 = [8] = 8
2D8 = [7, 7] = 14

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Vairar thrust his pike dead center on the shield of the animated armour. There was a thunderous cracking sound and the shield split in twain and clattered to the floor.

OOC: HH2's AC becomes "only" 18! I understand @MetaVoid's reasoning for thinking that the AC might be separate from the overall creature's, but for simplicity sake (both are moving targets) I'd like to leave it as "hit the AC, choose to target the creature or the shield". For more how-the-sausage-is-made: I ruled that these very well-made shields have a damage threshold of 10 (do less than 10 in a hit and they are unharmed) and 20 HP. Booming blade works (I can't imagine why not) and so, 27 damage destroyed the shield in one hit. Well done!

Neurotic

I plan on living forever. Or die trying.
The armor hit with the spear staggers for a moment, but rights itself almost immediately. Shield arm, with the remains of the shattered shield comes up, holding the sword in both hands now. It swings at the priest, but the shield shard catches on the armor. It throws its aim and the sword swishes close, but harmlessly by Vairar.

The other one however uses the opportunity to thrust under the swing and it catches Vairar solidly in the torso.

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Lionel fired his crossbow into the helmet of the second suit of armour as it moved to block his vision from the first, then he furiously began to reload while the others fought on. Angis banged away at the thing, keeping it busy while Viarar destroyed its shield. Tommi made his way behind and took advantage of a moment where ORB5 had the first one distracted, and he knocked the helmet off with a well-placed stone. That suit suddenly clattered to the ground in pieces.

Escella sent some unpredictable eldritch bolts just wide of the scrum, avoiding her enemy along with her allies. Finally, Lionel finished loading his crossbow and fired again, and the second suit burst apart, scattering pieces across the floor.

OOC: Encounter Over. That was quick. Lionel hit the 18 AC with his third round shot, so I took the damage. Both were destroyed.

Kobold Stew

Last Guy in the Airlock
Tommi walks over to one of the suits, and examines it. Is it empty? Is there the remains of something inside it? He wants to understand what possessed these suits and why they attacked. He is, simultaneously, aware that hisinterest in this will last 15 seconds, tops, unless there's something to see.

"We've got somewhere to be."

Angis grunted as the armor clattered to pieces. Well, he had been less than effective in this fight. “Well done, elf,” he grunted to Vairar as he slipped his axes back into their harness. “Wot go’ intae these, I wonder?” He picked up one of the helms and studied it.

Lionel also wondered what just happened. He had never seen anything like this before. Suits of armour are not suppose to move by themselves, right? he asked nobody in particular.

Legend
As Angis lifted the helmet, a puff of acrid smoke burst out, curling his moustache and causing the dwarf to cough. Tommi was poking at the chest-plate when that happened, and he too needed to cover his face.

OOC: Angis and Tommi take 9 points of necrotic damage (dc12 constitution save for 4 instead).

Escella began to decend the stairs, peering through the hazy dimness ahead of her. It was quiet down there, far too quiet, and she wondered what could be stopping the Elf Lord from responding to her.

OOC: I will try to expand on this soon.

Tommi's poking at the apparently empty armour with Gutter, when a noxious vapour rises up. It tastes like mouldy orange, he thinks, as he begins to cough and choke. There is a fine and acrid dust, and he feels it constricting his throat.

His eyes begin to water, and he tries to use the leather on his sleeve to wipe them clean, to no avail. He wants to spit the taste from his mouth, but is unable to -- his mouth is so, so dry.

OOC: Con Save: 1d20+1 vs DC 12 = 9. Fail. 34/39-9 = 25/39 Hit points currently.

FitzTheRuke

Legend
As the others began to join her, circling the stairs that led down to the final landing, Escella spotted through the foul-smelling smoke the body of a human guard. Tommi had met this man the previous day in the guardroom, a man of Daggerford who's name was Tammish. He had a foul sense of humour and a deep laugh.

Now he lay in a heap at the bottom of the stairs with his eyes bulging, as if he had been strangled.

The landing was a large circular area with three exits (aside from the stairway up): Three archways led down three staircases. To the west was the kitchens where Sir Darfin was expected to be. To the north was the guardroom that led further to the secret room of magical doors, where Tommi had left Titus and Lady Shalendra, and to the south was storerooms and cellars.

On the south stairs lay another body, hard to make out who it was in the dim haze.

Kobold Stew

Last Guy in the Airlock
"I know him! I met this guy last..." Tommi's voice trails off as he gets his bearings, the taste of mouldy orange still caking his mouth

He knows of the invaluable treasures through the north door, and he says his thoughts aloud: "The portals are through there... the guard room is probably empty. I've not told you all about the protals, but they are important."

Tommi runs to the to the north steps and down. He remembers the door at the bottom, and he sees if he can open it. (He hopes to see it locked and barred from this side; that would be best). If it is locked from the other side there should be a keyhole or whatever here that he can examine, or if it's open, he will go right through, whistling for Orb5 as he does so.
