D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Using the rope of the anchor, Enseth climbs aboard an stands at the stern to scope the darkness.

"Stand-by alert. Enemy vessel approaching. Estimated time to firing range, 33 secondes. He turns off his headlight to avoid enemy detection while they maneuver.

Looking at all those defenseless living being aboard, Enseth launches a quick ballistic trajectory calculation. From the results obtained, he improvises a wall of shield at the stern, with two crossed oars as the supporting structure and some shields hanging on the side of the boat as the wall. Then, he equips one of them and deploys his own, bracing himself for the potential incoming rain of arrows, ready to protect his comrades with his two shields if any arrows bypass his wall.

OOC: To build the wall of shield, Enseth can maybe use is Fixer Device (mending) to quicken the construction. Breaking wood/ropes and then super glue it together with mending to "weld" them together. By raising the wall, he can maybe create a good cover and with his stance, give disadvantage to the shooters.

About the light, those creatures have darkvision, so they can see us even if Enseth turns off his headlight. But does it blind them if he turns it toward their boat? If not, does it help him to be the main target and intercept arrows?

Enseth

Enseth climbed into the boat, water running out of the groves in his shining armour. He moved to the stern and began constructing a larger shield-wall there.

OOC: The stern-wall now provides +5 AC cover (instead of +2 like it did before). Enseth should be pretty much impossible to shoot back there, and sure, his headlamp will make him something of a target. You might be able to blind a specific goblin by shining it right in his eyes, but it's probably more work than it's worth. (It would require an action, maybe a check.)

Titus climbed into the boat, seating himself in the back. Morwin flew overhead. Titus closed his eyes and sent his senses into his Tressym.

The night came alive as he looked through the Tressym's night eyes. Mentally, he asked Morwin to watch around the, looking for dangers and staying close enough for Titus to see through his connection.

OOC: Using his familiar to keep an eye out. He can see through the familiars eyes as long as it is within 100 ft, and the familiar has Darkvision out to 60 ft, effectively giving Titus 160 ft Darkvision. Looking out for whatever he might want to see.

Titus

Titus sent Morwin to fly over all three boats. The winged cat could well see that the third boat was moving swiftly through the water and was definitely gaining on the middle boat (the one Titus was in). He flew ahead and could see that the river bent to the south around the hill that the Ducal Castle in the City sat on. The water widened and deepened as it went around the bend, making the city's docks on the north bank in the calmest waters, but the south side sloshed around a rocky bank. Janos' boat was heading for the city, sure to be safe under the protection of the archers on the wall.

Lionel

Lionel climbed into an oar-well and grabbed an oar. He began to row with all his might, and Marigold laughed. She meant no insult, she was truly impressed with his determination, but still, he could feel the colour rise in his cheeks. Seeing his embarrassment she said, "Oh, don't stop rowing! You are doing so well! Very strong strokes!" Lionel looked at his oar as he rowed. He was doing it well.

Snake

Having never rowed before, Snake did not have the best technique. His timing was a little off, in particular because of the confusing beat the hobgoblin was slamming on his shield. He started by trying to match the beat, and quickly gave up.

His strokes were a little tentative, and not terribly strong. But he was rowing and they would need all oars manned to maintain a good distance from the pursuing boat.

At his place at the oars, Angis glared at the hobgoblin. “Keep that beat steady, ye mangy cur,” he warned the creature. “My finger might get itchy.” He took his heavy crossbow and set it on the bench crossing the boat, the quarrel aimed straight at the hobgoblin, before he put his back into the stroke with the oars.

Angis

The hobgoblin nodded to Angis and made a show of beating the correct timing. By the time he went back to his antics of throwing off the rowers, Angis was too busy rowing to shoot the bastard. As soon as I get th'chance... he thought to himself.

Challenge Segment One Results

The occupied raiding boat furiously worked it's way around the bend to the south. They were within long bow-shot of the city wall now, and they were under fire. Most of the arrows landed in the river, but a few struck the shield-wall on the sides of the boat. Janos' boat was heading for the city docks, and was not being fired upon.

The raiding boat that was chasing was also taking ineffective fire. There were enough goblins aboard to hold shields over the heads of the occupants, creating a turtle-shell. The most well-fired arrows from the walls stuck into these shields.

Occasional arrow-fire came from the goblins only to strike Enseth's shield-wall.

Bruno, the old-man at the tiller, said "We can follow Janos, but we might get killed before they figure out we're not goblins! The south bank has a little channel that will take us behind some rocks and further from the walls. It's shallow, though, and we might hit ground. Maybe they'll follow us and get stuck. Which way should I steer?"

GM: Challenge Segment Two choice: Go for the city and try to identify yourselves so you don't get shot, OR go for the south bank and try not to ground. You can try to trick the chasing boat to follow you instead of Janos and ground itself. Feel free to discuss in character or in OOC thread. Or both.
