D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Enseth takes the anchor and use it to secure the boat. He waits for those lagging behind for a few moments and then walks into the river, pulling the boat toward the far bank (near a gate or docks. I don't visualize the map so well but you got the idea. )

Dandin flashes a smile at the older man. "Then steer if you please. We'll make these ruddy greenskins do the hard work."

Looking over the gunwale, he called out to the slower members of the group. "Hurry up! We need to get out of here but quick!"

OOC: So Enseth is going to drag the boat by it's anchor across the river by walking on the bottom? I like the idea, but I can't imagine it being easy, or quick. In fact, I suspect that with the current (it's not strong, but it's heavy), the boat would very soon be dragging you, rather than you dragging it (it is much, much heavier than you are). Also, I assume he will wait for everyone to get aboard. I get the impression that Tommi is thinking of rounding out the rowers with a few of the sleeping goblins, which might be a more effective plan.

(Though I should point out there is only one sleeping goblin in sight. The other three are up the hill near Janos' house hidden in the tall grass. They'd take a while to round up. Time you probably don't have.

OOC:
Here is how I see things :
Everybody on the boat was unconscious, wounded or an enemy. So I supposed that they will not be very efficient as rower. Enseth can't guide the boat, row and watch for the prisoners at the same time.
Now if he drags it, he can guide it, following the current to the far bank while they watch the gobs on the boat.
Now technically, I supposed he walks at the same speed as the boat ( half speed but dashing), the current helps him too and he just want to guide it (not fight the current) while they rest onboard. Furthermore he did a wonderful 21 Athletics. And it's cool. That was just to shed light on my point of view but I don't know every parameters like speed of the current, weight of the boat, width of the river etc. So I leave it to your judgment and do as it seems more appropriate.

Angis Honack

Round 0

Angis growled in frustration as the goblin dragged Lionel away and dumped him into the boat. He was a bit surprised when the goblins surrendered. But then it was only a matter of time before more showed up.

And then...they were taking the boat? Angis supposed it was smart. They would be able to get out of here faster and avoid the reinforcements. But he wasn’t sure they had enough to crew the thing and keep an eye on the goblins at the same time.

Angis hurried over and clambered into the boat, muttering all the while about how dwarves are supposed to have both feet firmly on the ground. He glowered at the goblins, warning them not to make mischief. He gathered their weapons and tossed them overboard before he slipped his axes into his belt and took a place at the oars to help.

Challenge: Escape from Pursuit

Everyone piled into the two boats and shoved off into the river, Enseth pulling the goblin's raiding boat by the anchor-rope while Dandin and Angis kept the remaining goblins in-line. It was very dark now, on the river, but torches and lanterns could be seen from the city wall to the south-west, on the north bank of the river, but around a bend. The fires of burning cottages lit the south bank to the south-east.

Echoing across the water were the shouts of the leaders of another goblin raiding-boat, in pursuit and closing quickly. It would not be long before they were within archery range, and many of the now-occupied raiding boat knew all to well the feeling of goblin arrows.

GM: This will be a three-segment challenge (details on the OOC thread). Everyone should be involved. Segment One Goal: Stay far enough ahead of the pursuit boat so you don't get riddled with arrows. Skills allowed: Anything you think is appropriate. (Examples: Enseth rolling Str (athletics) to swing the boat around by the anchor, Angis or Dandin rolling Cha (Intimidate) to get the goblins to row, etc). Check OOC for further discussion.

The moment everyone is onboard Dandin turned to the old man and grinned. "You're up Bruno! I'll get these grubbers rowing, you just get us back to the city! I believe in you!"

Looking to the goblins he flicked his rapier again. "Now row! And if you know what's good for you, you'll row quickly..."

For good measure Dandin created a small illusion of their boat in which arrows were flying in and some were sticking out of various goblin figures.

Dandin

The goblins may be mean, ornery little cusses, but they knew how to be bullied into working hard, and they had rowed this boat before. They leaned into their oars when instructed to do so. The hobgoblin, on the other hand, made a show of banging the stroke on his shield, but kept looking over his shoulder toward the other raiding boat, constantly missing the beat.

From within his boat, Tommi keeps his weight low as he makes his way to the bow. as he moves forward, hand over hand from thwart to thwart, he offers encouragement to anyone he can, placing his hand on their shoulders as he does so:

"Good to see you. We can do this."
"Don't let your grip slip! You're doing amazing."
"Let me adjust your bandage for you."
"Try using the same grip with both hands."

He's bursting with adrenaline -- a side-effect of the potion -- and is supportive. When he gets to the bow, he sets himself on a watch, peering into the night and guiding the boat's course.

OOC: I presume there is some benefit to having someone on watch up front. If so, perception [roll0] (or, if there's not enough light and it's with disadvantage, the worse of that and [roll1]).

Tommi also has the ability to cast the cantrip Guidance -- his "advice" is truly inspired, and his suggestions if taken could perhaps give anyone +1d4 on a skill roll.

Tommi

Tommi made his way to the bow of the boat, giving encouragement along the way. Once there, he peered forward into the dark night. It was hard to see anything on the river itself, though he could see the lights along the city wall, and he wondered if Sherlen was looking out for him.

Then a lantern appeared and he was able to make out the boat ahead of them. Janos held up the lantern and waved, beckoning Tommi's boat to follow his lead.

OOC: You may not be able to see much without light, but you can see lights. I'm going to call that one a success.
