D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Escella casts expeditious retreat on herself and gives chase (can this be last round?). She isn't sure what she's going to do when she catches up to him. She has a plan but she doubts it will work. Her only other option is to attack him.

Vairar thinks about all he knows about Malar and how he would best serve if he was possessed by spirit serving such god. His conclusion was it should survive first and then hunt or plan to hunt whatever it is he needs.

He heads after the group, thinking should he join Lunn in running up or Tommi running down. For the moment, he thinks Tommi with his reckless running is probably in greater danger. He follows the rogue.

(Can this be last round?).
OOC: Possibly. It depends on whether you understood quickly what was going on or not. Gimme a WIS (Insight) check, and pick for me whether you are following Tommi, Vairar, and Morgan (into the natural cavern that had all the big messed-up rats) or following Lunn (through the wine-cellar and up the stairs, in an attempt to head Lionel off). The result of your check, if you'd like to know, will determine how early you join the chase, making either narrative result (catching up to/heading off Lionel) more likely.

Legend
Escella wasn't sure at first what all of the kerfuffle was about - she was used to the party arguing on occasion, and she'd been more concerned with the question of pressing on. When the others had all started to rush past her, she got the gist, and she cast a spell that would quicken her step and keep her up with the rest of them (in fact, she quickly passed the dwarves and Titus, and would have passed Vairar, had he not chosen to take a different route).

She caught up to Lunn as the big orc was nearly at the cellar stairs. He'd shouldered aside one of the old wine racks, and a bottle had fallen out and smashed on the floor. There was the strong smell of vinegar. Though Lunn was fast, Escella with her spell was slightly faster, and she ducked by him to ascend the spiral staircase from the wine-cellar to the kitchen.

Down in the natural cavern that was to the west of the swollen door, not far from where Tommi had first annoyed a feral rat, there was a rope and bucket that came down from above, to gather water from one of the many fresh streams that flowed beneath the Lodge. As Oh-Six's light illuminated the area, Tommi (and Morgan and Vairar, who were somewhat behind) saw Lionel. At first he looked to Tommi's eyes like his old friend, struggling to climb the free-dangling rope (Lionel was graceful, but quite rotund, and the rope swung from side-to-side as he climbed. If the situation were different, Tommi would have laughed.

But as the light grew more focused on him, and Oh-Six squealed out his location, Lionel turned to look at Tommi, and his eyes shone red. Then he cursed, and mumbled in a harsh-sounding language that Tommi was sure Lionel didn't know, and he let go of the rope. Instead of falling, he levitated up and out of the stone well in the courtyard above.

GM: Turn Two Results: Four More Successes. Almost got him!

Begin Turn Three: "Catch Lionel before he escapes into the woods."

Suggested Skill Rolls: Those below him might want to climb the rope (Athletics) or find another way out. Those upstairs (Escella will reach the kitchen) might want to roll Perception or Investigation to figure out where he's appearing, or Athletics or Constitution to outrun him. By the time they get to a point where they could possibly see him, he'll be looking for cover to make his escape. I'll post a map by request!

Seeing the little halfling levitating up the well, Morgan calls upon his magic to negate the spell.

So, Morgan can auto cancel levitate with counterspell or dispel magic but I know this is a skill challenge so, with your permission, I’d like to mark off a 3rd level spell slot and roll Int+Proficiency as my skill roll. If that’s legal, here’s my roll:

Counterspell/dispel magic: 1D20+7 = [17]+7 = 24

If we fail despite this, we can narrate how the dispelling is too late or something.

If you would rather I roll something else, I will edit.

As soon as Escella reaches the kitchen she looks to see if she got above ground before him.

OOC: If she had a good enough roll and can move over to the hole before he fully rises, she will attempt to find something to plug the hole, perhaps at a distance if mage hand can help.

Worst case scenario, she will use Ray of Frost to slow him down. (Well, I suppose Chaos Bolt is the actual worst case...)

And I will summon the map. I don't remember how the courtyard and kitchen relate.

When Tommi catches up and sees Lionel climbing the rope, he springs to action. He slides Gutter into its scabbard, the blade shaking no to itself all the way in. Tommi grabs the bottom of the rope and immediately starts climbing himself, and over hand. The immediate effect, of course, is to steady the rope for Lionel, but after he turns and hisses at his friends below (were we still his friends, Tommi asks himself?) he let go and began to float, while Tommi continued to hand-over-hand his way higher and higher.

A few short days ago, Tommi had been climbing beneath a waterfall, he remembers, and the blisters on his fingers from that uncomfortable but still exhilerating climb were still sore on his finger tips. The leather in his shoes still rubbed awkwardly.

But this was different. This was his friend Lionel. Or at least it had been.

OOC: Athletics 1d20+6=24.

The "Courtyard" is the space between the two buildings. The kitchen is the room that Escella & Lunn are shown in, with a pantry/servants quarters to the right. The Well is marked. (I cleared it up, but there is a collapsed "bridge" section between the door to the kitchen and the well).
