D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

“It could also get you killed,” Titus says, his hand on his blade hilt. “Let me send Morwin to see if anything is watching the road.”

The cat-bird flew off and returned, reporting to Titus that there were two Orcs atop the tower watching the road, and one at the base, watching the tower door (out of sight both to and from the road). By the smell, he assumed that more were inside, though he could not judge numbers.

OOC: The tower looks like this, but in worse repair (particularly the roof), and "orc-d up" with blackish paint and the occasional spike.

"We could always use the cart as bait, see if we can't draw some of them out after a nice fat merchant."

Dandin rubed his slightly plump belly as he spoke, nibbling away on the last bits of yet another apple. "We could even hide one or two of you under some blankets to make the cart look fuller than it is. That'd be a right surprise!"

“Hrm,” Angis said as he eyed the tower. There was likely little way to get around it unobserved. It was at the top of the switchback trail for a reason. They may have already seen them approach. “Orcs,” he said with disgust at how they had vandalized the beautiful dwarven construction of the tower.

OOC: Can I spot if there is a way around the tower where we can sneak past unseen?

Looking around, Angis was certain that any way past the watchtower would require leaving the cart behind and climbing the cliffs from further away. The old dwarven road was built perfectly into the side of the cliff to allow the watchtower a good view of the last two switch-backs, with no other approaches. The tower itself was built into the side of a rocky outcropping that only allowed a narrow path cut through the rock to get to its front door. (This last information he understood from Titus' report).

No, the dwarves who had built it had done too good a job. The only realistic way around would be to abandon the road and take a boat along the river or to spend hours climbing the cliff further to the north.

Titus shook his head, “We should take the tower. I do not want an Orc outpost at our backs. I can send Morwin back to Daggerfell once we’ve taken it, with a note telling them there is a tower up for grabs.”

“I agree, I don’t want an orc tower at my back, but it will be no easy thing to take.” Snake said as he looked out the tower.

“We will be in the open as we approach and then we need to force the door as we take arrow fire, then, well then we need to deal with what is inside.” Snake pawed at the ground, “If we could get the door open before we reach it, or within a few seconds after we have a shot, otherwise it’s a long shot.”

“Or we can have someone try to sneak up in the dead of night and set fire to the tower, perhaps we can burn them out.”

"If we use the cart as bait," says Tommi pikcing up on Dandin's suggestion, "I could play the merchant. I don't look so threatening, and I'd like to help."

Angis was both proud and annoyed at how well dwarves built things. “We’d be climbin’ in the dark if we try an’ storm it,” he said, indicating the cliff face. “We cuild gae doon an’ try the river, but aye, tha’ leaves the orcs sittin’ pretty ‘ere. P’raps the merchant route ‘tis best. Tower likely willnae burn wi’oot a lot o’ fuel. ‘Tis guid dwarven stonework. An’ we’ll be gatherin’ an’ preppin’ tha’ fuel under arrow fire.”

Angis glanced over at Titus and Enseth. “Can yer wee beasties get us a count o’ ‘ow many orcs we be dealin’ wi’?” he asked. “Prefer’bly unseen an’ no’ full o’ arrows?”
