D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

"<He took them up the river to General Shorgg.>" the bugbear answered and then added defiantly, "<The General begins to form a Host! He has done Maglubiyet's Will by taking the humans' river-town and will be made Warlord when the People answer the Call.>"

Round 0

Angis frowned a bit at the news. “<What river town?>” he asked the bubear. “<And what does Khurborbayaeg have to do with all this? Where does General Shorgg plan to attack next?>”

Looking up from his work, Dandin notices Drui's look and smiles in response. "I can take most of this back to Daggerford and sell it for a good price. Most of it's too big to be used, even by humans, but the metal can be sold to blacksmiths to be made into plows. Probably... I'll find a way to make us some coin."

The bugbear grunted and shrugged his big hairy shoulders, "I dunno. A town upriver. If I heard its name, I didn't listen. Hobgoblins tell us that if we are not... disciplined... we will get Khurborbayaeg's Curse: The Overseer God will punish us by causing us to be defeated in battle.">

Snake watched the conversation for a moment before out of the corner of his eye he saw something move. He leapt into action and spun in a circle three time attempting to catch the object before he realized it was his tail.

Snake reached his hands over his head stretching, “Just keeping limber,” he says quietly.

“Hrm.” Angis tugged at his beard a bit and looked to the others after informing them of the conversation. “Think ‘tis Julkoun they conquered?” he asked.

He turned back to the bugbear. “<How many goblins are there?>” It sounded like they might have gathered quite a number, unfortunately.

“Any other questions f’r ‘im?” Angis asked the others. “B’fore we end ‘im?”

Tommi has no taste for interrogation, he realizes. He's watching, since he is part of the group, but he runs his fingers over his scalp as a sign of discomfort. A fight is easier: both sides have an even shot. This feels different. And while he knows that there is information that they need, information that the others are successfully extracting.

In answer to Angis' question on numbers of goblinoids, the bugbear shrugged his hairy shoulders once more, <"Banners come and banners go. But Maglubiyet's call has gone out and more will come. The more victory General Shorgg has, the more banners will come. Shorgg will become Warlord and his Legion will become a Host. Then these lands will fall to Maglubiyet, so I am told.>"

While he repeated the doctrine as he has been taught it, he sounded as if he understood it little and cared about it even less. As long as there was beer and plunder, he would be content.

Angis considered the bugbear’s words and looked to the others, speaking in Common, “We might need t’ end this General Shorgg,” he said. “We cannae let this legion swell t’ a ‘ost.” Still, a legion was still a large number of goblinoids.

“Unless anyone else wants th’honor, we cannae be draggin’ prisoners aroun’, nor lettin’ ‘im run back t’ the warcamp an’ let ‘em know we’re comin’.”

Angis pulled his axes and lopped off the bugbear’s head.

“Burn ‘im wi’ th’others.”

The bugbear's head rolled across the ground. No one spoke for a moment. It was not an act of brutality but an act of necessity. Sentimentality in a case like this would be foolishness. The bodies were piled and burnt. Morwin and ORB1 circled above, moving further and further away to see if the smoke brought any attention. There were farmers about that had escaped the goblin raid, and they were keeping to themselves, only doing the necessary tasks of basic hard living and otherwise staying in doors in case of the raider's return.

Finding no goblin activity, the familiars returned to their masters. By then Dandin had filled his wagon with the farm's remaining valuables. Much of the lighter fare had been taken when the goblins had captured the family and their staff, but the bugbears themselves had kept their own plunder, and the farm itself still held many items that were easy to sell at market. Dandin considered that it was possible that the family would one day return but it seemed unlikely. In fact, this was a legal grey area - he was not, in case of law, robbing the farm. He was taking already stolen property away from a raiding party - possibly even a conquering host, if matters became worse than they already were.

If they managed to find and free the family in the future, he was sure they would be happy to have financed their own rescue.

OOC: Dandin (and any others grabbing things or searching the bodies) finds 35 gp in coins and trade items of various types and sizes and an estimated 250 gp worth of sellable goods, mostly brewer's supplies, rugs and wall-hangings.
