The Others
When Titus, Dandin, Angis, and Snake arrived at the River Gate, Tommi and Lionel were being held for trying to sneak out a seldom-used sally-port hidden in the wall to the right of the gate. The small door had no bridge of it's own, but Tommi had found a long, thin plank. A few guards had looked the other way, but Sherlen Millar had spotted him.
"Tommi, you can't go out there!" she had told him, both because it was her duty and because she was concerned for his safety, in spite of herself.
But Titus' arrival changed everything. The militia captain knew who he was, and when he expressed his intention of leading a group out to protect the innocent river-folk, there was nothing she could do to argue. In truth, she was very happy to be overruled on the subject - there was nothing she would prefer to leading a company of militia out there herself, but she served at the duke's pleasure, and her hands were tied. She nodded and allowed them to proceed, though she gave Tommi a look that said, I don't understand how you, of all people, are part of this group. (A look that doubled when she saw that Lionel Hardcheese was also going.)
From the base of the tower, a few sullen-looking river-men looked up from where they were held by guards. One of them shouted to Titus, "They be on the river! You'll be needin' a boat, an' crew! I can get ya one!"
Titus waved for them to be released to him, and the guards obeyed. The plank was laid across the moat from the sally-port and the sailors bounded across, followed by the halflings and Tommi. The plank creaked under the weight of Titus in his armour, and it positively sank under the weight of Angis, but the small party arrived at the other side of the moat without any unfortunate incident.
"Good luck!" Sherlen Millar called across the moat as her men pulled the plank back inside. She meant it for everyone, but she looked at Tommi as she said it.
