D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Escella looked at the bands. She was quite certain that a command word would cause them to release the elf lord. The only other way would be to break them, and it would be a shame to waste a useful magic item. Usually command words were kept simple a word or two - but if the bands belonged to the Red Wizard, they were likely to be in Thayan.

"Unfortunately, we might have to break the bands to release you. Do we know someone who can cast identify or speak with dead to ask the dead wizard?" Escella says. "I can do neither of these and I certainly am not strong enough to break the bands."

"I can cast a spell of Identify myself," said Sir Darfin, "But I do not have it to mind, and I can't do it while bound. Shalendra can do it as well, but I don't know if we can trust her to do it."

He said the last with a resigned sadness.

"I think we can try to revive Shalendra and see if she can do it. Although we should be fully healed before that. Does she have any ability to escape magically? Also, what do we know about the state of the castle? We had to fight suits of armor to get in here. Was that also Shalendra's doing?" Escella muses. "Or we can break the bands. What do you all think?"

"Break them!" says Talynen "The lord is more important alive and fighting than some thing that can be remade."

"They are magic. They cannot necessarily be remade." Escella says. "That is why I suggested reviving Shalendra. Additionally, feats of strength are not for me. One of you stronger types would have to break it. Time is probably important. We can only hope the gate house free from assault. And we know nothing of the rest of the keep."

"The armour is part of the Manor's security. It should have recognized you as my guests." said Sir Darfin. He thought for a moment and said, "Breaking the Bands of Bilarro will be no easy task. Perhaps try the Thayan word for 'release' or 'unbind' if you know it. I do not - and it would not work if I said it anyhow."

Tommi leans over Shalendra and hears her breathing. In spite of himself, he is unable to find forgiveness for her. Not yet. Gutter, on his hip, pulses in excitement.

"Give me a second," Tommi says, and he reaches for her belt. If there's a component pouch, or a wand or an amulet, or some other thing that might serve as a focus for her spells, he takes it away, pocketing it or throwing it to the other side of the room. When that is done, he looks at her fingers.

He knows he could break them all, and she might never case spells again. Or Gutter could take her hands at the wrists. Clean, quick. He wants to, and he is ashamed of his desire. Ashamed of his defeat.

Instead he reaches into his pack an pulls out the length of string. He ties her hands together, tight, the knots winding around her fingers and locking them together. He plls the strings tight, and he already sees the circulation backing up, turning them red. Purple will be next. He's worked quickly, but efficiently.

It's then he draws Gutter. And with his knee on his former companion's chest (assuming no one has stopped him this far), he grips the handle, poised to strike.

"There. I'm ready. You can heal her now." (It's perhaps not clear who he's talking to. He's staring at Shelandra.) "I do not think she can get away. If she somehow takes me over, then strike me down before you get to her. Let's see if she is again our ally. And if she can remove the bonds."

"Tommi, you realize she was probably not in control of herself because the Red Wizard used magic to make her betray her house? Right?" Escella says. "Ties her hands but not unduly tight. I say this because we fight foes that can usurp the mind. I would not want to find myself facing you if I succumbed to foul magic against my will. I hope you would not want to be treated that way either."
