Darrell K. Sweet, the artist who painted the U.S. book covers to fourteen Wheel of Time novels, has passed away. He was 77 years old. The webpage leads to a showcase of the covers he did for WoT.

I admit that his WoT covers always bugged me for being so off base, but I always wanted to like them because I liked his style and use of color.

Nice to see the full wrap-around of the cover pictures. I was always impressed by the information he used in drawing the lead characters but somewhat frustrated by the way he drew the trollocs (which typically looked like men in horned helmets!)

I remember when I noticed that practically every last fantasy novel that came out seemed to have a cover by him.

I would hardly call his covers "so off base". They might not be correct to every last detail, but he clearly read through the novels and paid attention. Not something you can say about a lot of cover art.

He and Larry Elmore were probably my favorite artists overall.
