Incantatrix help/opinions

First Post
In a recent campaign I decided to make a Incantatrix and its been a long time since I made a Arcane. I liked the concept and all, but the Metamagic abilities are really strange when I read them. Character is 6th lvl (Wiz5/Incan1) so I dont have the ability to boost other peoples spells, but looking at the Spellcraft DC, it seems really really dificult, even with a high INT and max ranks. (FYI: Boost a spell with a metamagic Spellcraft DC [18+(3 x altered spell lvl)]), so a empowered Cure Light wounds, would be DC 18 + 3 x 3 = 27, which isnt very hard, but up the lvls you go it starts getting really tough.
I took the following feats, but Im not quite sure, and the DM said he allow me to change them, since we are just starting: Collegiate Wizard (Complete Arcane), Craft Wand, Scribe Scroll (free), Sudden Silent, Empower Spell, Iron Will (prereq for Incantatrix). Im looking forward to Quicken spell ASAP. (Im a generalist, not specialized and I killed Necromancy Domain when I took Incantatrix - its a Drow campaign and Ive got high INT).
Question to all Incantatrixs and people who have seen one in play: How often do you guys use these abilities ? Which Metamagics do you recomend ? Do I change my feats ? Extend spell seems like a great pick to help out my Cleric, any other choices ?

Thanks in advance,
cloaker

Well, there are ways to boost your Spellcraft (Skill Focus, magic items, etc), but it really IS supposed to be THAT difficult.

Look at it this way... you have quite a few uses per day, where you can apply the metamagic essentially FOR FREE.

This is usually very expensive and highly limited (i.e. metamagic rods, Divine Metamagic, etc).

Being able to apply these effects only to lower level spells is completely fair. And really an empowered Cure Light Wounds is a 3rd level spell, that's what you can barely cast at 6th level (a cleric, anyways). So the effect is quite appropriate for your level, or not?

Not sure what Collegiate Wizard does (ah, wait... was that the 4 free spells per level up instead of 2?)... but your feat selection looks very good, really! :)

(Im a generalist, not specialized and I killed Necromancy Domain when I took Incantatrix - its a Drow campaign and Ive got high INT).

Hope you learned Ray of Enfeeblement and False Life before you did so.
You can still use the necromantic spells you knew before entering the PrC!

Daily.

Which Metamagics do you recomend ?

Empower and Extent are pretty good.

Do I change my feats ?

Nope, just keep them that way.

Extend spell seems like a great pick to help out my Cleric, any other choices ?

Yes, Extend Spell is very nice as an Incantatrix (BTW, if your character is male, he would be called Incantater, Incantatrix is the femininum). :)

At higher level, Persistent Spell is extremely good (or rather somewhat broken ;)).
Quicken Spell and Chain Spell are both good for use with Instant Metamagic.
Sudden Maximize is good, too. Sculpt Spell and Split Ray can be useful.

Really ? I thought it was like Specialization that you can never ever cast a spell from that school! Well this changes my Spell Selection.

Thanks for the help,
Cloaker

PS: I had a faint memory about the Incantatar, thanks once more.

hmmm ... new question: in the Players Guide to Faerun it says under Incantatrix PrC:

Focused Studies (EX): At 1st level, the incantatrix gives up a school of magic so as to focus more on the remaining schools. She must chose a school of magic other than abjuration and divination as a prohibited school. This prohibited school is in addition to any others already chosen due to school specialization. Thus, a specialized wizard taking this PrC has three prohibited schools instead of two.

Thanee said I would keep the earlier spells I had before taking the PrC, but prohibited school seems kind of a strong statement, which tells me that I lose everything from the school I drop. I know the specialization in Dragonlance you keep the earlier spells, but Im not quite sure here. Anyone else opinion on this ?

Thanks,
cloaker

I'm with Thanee... anything you already have from that school, you keep.

I am playing 1 in another campaign and they rock. You can apply your metamagic feats to spells cast by others and spells in place on you. Their is a forgotten realms spell called wieldskill that gives a +10 competence bonus to 1 skill for 1 min/level to help with the really hard spellcraft rolls. The real power comes in your ability to apply metamagic feats to wands, specifically quicken.

I have multiple wands, I start by using a wand of shield and I quicken it(uses 5 charges) defends me and still allows me to attack. Get some low cost offensive wands (such as wand of MM level 5, 3750 gold half if you craft) then you can cast your spell and then burn 5 charges to fire of 3 missles. There are other ways to go but this is the basics.

In the DMG there is a prestige class, which also works like that. The Red Wizard. They simply forgot to add the sentance to make it clear.

Also, from a logical viewpoint, why should you suddenly forget the spells you have learned previously, just because you stop studying in that field in order to focus on other areas?

Only if you play a 3.0 campaign, but then the Incantatrix class works different, too.

There is, IIRC, a spell in Complete Adventurer, which does something similar.
