Takmarek - The Kobold Savior
For many years the kobold tribe of Ganymok had lived in an old abandoned Dwarven settlement, working the mines for iron and the occasional odd deposit of silver or gold. The place was easily defended, and had been abandoned for some unknown reason, so for many years the kobolds lived in relative quiet. They considered the place lucky, particularly after they had discovered a strange monument deep in the minds. It showed a small humanoid with outstretched wings, its clawed feet on top of smaller bodies of other humanoids.
Careful interpretation by the tribe’s shaman, a sorceress named Lishak, determined it to mean that a great and powerful kobold would be born with such features, and he would conquer all their enemies. However, the monument was not truly a monument, but simply an odd rock formation. Lishak knew this, and had made up the prophecy in order to goad her tribe into action when the time became right.
Though the tribe had enjoyed many years of peace in this place, they were not truly prospering. Though their traps had kept many of the Underdark denizens at bay, it would probably only be a matter of time before the dwarves returned, or the drow, or the derro, or any other number of powerful people. Lishak was determined to have a leader capable of giving her people a reason to strike out on their own… and to keep her in power indefinitely. The tribal chieftain was old, and Lishak could easily control him. However, his young son was showing streaks of independence that did not bode well for the continuance of the status quo. If she could get this “prophesied” leader, there would be no question of keeping her in her current place.
To facilitate her prophecy, she spent days scrying out a certain person in the caverns near the kobolds’ mine. There was a very young emerald dragon in those caverns alone, one that would be open to both gifts of knowledge and gifts of gold and steel. Lishak took a small group of trustworthy warriors with her on the pretense of a pilgrimage and sacrifice to Kurtulmak. In truth she penetrated to the lair of the dragon, abasing herself before him, and pleading that he listen to her question.
The dragon, called Resskarmoxiazan, had lost his parents to drow a short while ago, and was a bit overwhelmed by the sorceress’ deference. He listened to her plea, that there was a great prophecy about a dragon-touched kobold that would be able to lead her people in times of great trouble. She insisted that visions from Kurtulmak himself had led her to him, to plead to sire this savior of the kobolds. She had brought with her many fine things for his growing hoard, along with long and detailed scrolls about the history and customs of the kobold people as gifts.
Resskarmoxiazan had heard little about kobolds, other than the fact that they were not particularly fond of intruders. However, Lishak was particularly attractive for a non-dragon, and the thought that he could help fulfill a divine prophecy was enough to sway him to agree. He accepted their gifts and gave Lishak what she desired. Using spells of fertility to be certain she carried the child, Lishak returned to the tribe of Ganymok, exulting that Kurtulmak had heard her pleas and blessed her with the prophesized leader.
Lishak gave birth to her half-dragon son and named the would-be savior Takmarek. Because he was closely watched by the entire community, Lishak could not have the total control over him that she wished. But she could advise him and teach him, and that she did. She never let him believe that he was anything less than a gift from Kurtulmak and destined for great things. She nurtured him to be a great and powerful warrior, and also to embody the kobold spirit. However, the nature of his dragon parent shown through even the most persistent teachings.
He demonstrated none of the cowardice, or rather “survival instinct” that so typified kobolds, nor the sadistic streak they all tended to share. He was far stronger than any normal kobold, with a forceful personality. He chose not to prove himself by torturing the small animal they caught for food, preferring a quick kill with his claws, fangs, or his potent breath weapon. His ability to fly allowed him to be the most effective hunter of the tribe. He was very popular with his tribesmen; indeed he was everybody’s friend, enough so that Lishak began to worry. She did indeed desire a leader, but Takmarek was not becoming what she had intended.
He was popular, oh yes, and a strong warrior, but he needed to be more ruthless and driven if he was ever going to lead the Ganymok tribe in a war against their enemies. She tried to drop poison in his ear at every opportunity, telling him that his tribe talked behind his back about his un-kobold-like tendencies. She told him he must be more forceful, that he must truly lead them in order to crush their enemies. He had been born to lead the kobolds in a war, not be the most popular hunter in the clan. She desperately tried to separate him from his friends, to instill in him more of the aloofness that a leader must have when he came of age. However, the young, headstrong half-dragon was proving too difficult to handle.
Takmarek did not consider Lishak to be his mother, as she had told him even though her body had bore him, he was the son of all the tribe. He did listen to her advice, though it had gotten more and more shrill as of late, and he less liked to hear that he must stop seeing his friends rather than what a good warrior he was. Truth be told, Takmarek was more than a bit spoiled, and overconfident in his power. He also did not have much in the way of common sense. And he was far too content; he could see no reason to want to start a war anytime soon. Though he knew he was supposed to lead the kobolds to greatness, he didn’t even know what greatness was.
Lishak was frustrated by seeing all of her plans come unraveled by a headstrong boy. She opted to take a desperate measure in order to keep her position firm, as her son did not yet show the desire to conquer that many assumed would be shortly forthcoming. To temper his boyish tendencies and bring his woefully underdeveloped sense of vengeance and duty to the fore, she would send him on a quest.
She knew of a hag of great and terrible power and profound evil, which lived many weeks journey from Ganymok’s settlement. The hag kept many slaves, including many kobolds. By sending Takmarek to free some of the kobold slaves from their servitude, he would finally see the lot of so many of their people. Perhaps seeing the atrocities would finally kindle the fires of vengeance necessary for him to want to start a war. He would not have to fight the hag, of course. Though subtlety was not his strong suit, he knew just enough of the typical kobold tactics of hiding and striking when the enemy was weakest. That would be enough for a raid to free the captured kobolds, and he would not even have to meet the hag.
She claimed to have a vision from Kurtulmak, seeing the kobold slaves in all their misery. She said that the god had spoken to her and said that the chosen one must go and free them from their servitude to help him prove his worth to lead. Thus charged with the quest and outfitted with the finest fruits of the kobolds’ labor, Takmarek struck out toward the hag’s fortress.

It was a long and difficult journey, and many times along the way he had to defend himself with his characteristic ferocity and mighty strength. He would occasionally meet other kobold tribes and he would join them in hunting. Though he would never participate in their acts of torturing their prey before eating he, he was quite capable of taking down larger prey that they had not dreamed of before now.
The other tribes had not heard of Takmarek’s prophesized birth, though they were quite willing to believe it after seeing his prowess. They wished him well on his quest, for many of the enslaved kobolds had been from these tribes. They lacked the strength and the courage to free their own kinsmen, something that Takmarek couldn’t condone, but he promised that their kinsmen would return to them nevertheless. Many made promises that if he could free their kinsmen from the dread hag, then they would find the courage to help him when he was ready to lead the kobolds to greatness. Some even gave him gifts of magic to help him on his way. Encouraged, Takmarek continued on toward the hag’s keep.

However, unknown to both Lishak and Takmarek, the hag was a devotee of Orcus, and was known to be in the shadow of the god, which is to say, her soul had been claimed by her dark lord. Her soul had been tricked from her decades ago, securing her loyal service until her dying day. She used the power granted to delve further into the arts of necromancy and mind-control, and became an overlord without peer. Her undead servants captured living beings that she used her arts to compel initial obedience from. These living beings labored in mines and in the fields to bring her wealth of both gold and grain, enough to continue to extend her reach further with each passing year.
Though as a servant to Orcus, the hag, Wendare, preferred undead servants, living ones were necessary to prevent overzealous crusaders from attacking her stronghold. Slavery was common enough that yet another cruel overlord would bring little notice, but fields full of zombies would certainly bring the wrath of the divine upon her shortly. By keeping the number of visible undead to an absolute minimum, she was able to keep her keep secure.
Despite Wendare’s power however, she was angry at having her soul stolen from her. She desired power, and the freedom to use it, and with her soul within the shadow of the god, she had no freedom. In was in this state that Takmarek came to her. He had arrived after his long journey, coming from the cool darkness of the caves into the bright glaring daylight where the hag’s fortress lay. But even the brassy sun could not prevent him from seeing the terrible conditions of his kinsmen. The kobolds labored in the fields with little water or food, whipped by creatures that Takmarek had never seen before. Their pale gray flesh never sweated in the intense heat of the day, and their eyes never blinked. Unnerved, he decided to wait until after dark, after these strange overseers had gone away.
As he used to do when hunting the dangerous creatures of his Underdark home, he’d wait until they had quieted down for the night before moving in. However, that was about all the stealth he was good for. In his typical reckless fashion, he broke into the slave pens where the cowed kobolds were kept. Arriving in a flamboyant fashion, wings spread, armor shining, and weapons at the ready, he cried out to the kobolds that he was here to save them and to crush their enemies. Startled by Takmarek’s strange appearance, but recognizing the koboldness of him, the half-starved slaves ran into the night, down into the caves where they had came from.
Wendare’s zombie overlords retained their old intelligence, and were able to come in force against Takmarek. He was unused to being attacked by many intelligent foes, but still made a fierce accounting of himself. Many of the zombies fell beneath his blade before he was finally overcome. The remaining zombies captured him rather than killing him, and dragged him before Wendare. The hag spoke to him from behind a screen, using her most dulcet tones to ask why he had freed her slaves. Takmarek boldly proclaimed that he had been born to help lead the kobolds to greatness, and that he was on a quest to help prove his worth. When she acidly pointed out that he could die here if she gave the word, and would be no help to any kobold, he responded that he was protected by Kurtulmak, and that he would return to help his people.
Wendare was intrigued by his story, and even more so as she recognized his emerald dragon heritage. The boy could be of use to her. She bade her servants to release him, and gave him a cup of wine. Confident to a fault in the face of his enemies, he drank, as if daring his unseen enemy to do her worst. The wine was in fact laced with a potent love potion. As he drank, Wendare changed her own form to that of a human half-dragon, and stepped out from behind the screen. She explained to him that her soul had been stolen from her, and that the demon that had done it was compelling her to do these terrible acts of slavery and raising the dead. While her soul was hostage, she could not help but do these evil things.
But there was a way to help her. A quicksilver sword could break the connection that the demon had on her soul, but she was bound from getting it. Takmarek fell instantly in love with Wendare, and was moved by her story. In an instant the love-struck fool declared that he would quest for the quicksilver sword. Wendare told him that it lay in the tower of a sorcerer that would be loath to give it up. Takmarek dismissed the danger, utterly certain that no magician could stand before him.
Wendare had been careful in her choice of champion. The sorcerer was one who prided himself on spells of sound; something that Takmarek’s dragon parent had rendered him immune to. As Orcus had forbade her from questing for the sword, as well as from using the dark blessings she received him his hand to armor her other servants against the sorcerer’s magic, using Takmarek was the best choice possible. The quicksilver sword had been the result of half a lifetime’s work on behalf of the sorcerer, reflecting his other interest in extra-planar travel. It was able to break the connections of people to their planes, break the silver cord of the soul on the Astral Plane, and sever connections wrought by magic. There was only a single one in existence, and that resided with the sorcerer Tarj.
Unknown to Wendare however, the sorcerer had recently died. During his planar travels he had earned the enmity of an unusually intelligent rast hunter. They had begun a feud that had stretched across multiple planes, which had started with the quicksilver sword. With such a sword, the rast would have become a hunter without peer amongst the planes, but had nearly died from having it used on him first. Since then, it had hunted Tarj for several years. The most recent skirmish had left Tarj quite dead. However, the sorcerer had made arrangements with his worthy apprentice to have him restored to life, in a fashion.
His body had returned to his tower due to a contingency spell, and his apprentice began the process of mummification on his master’s body (as Tarj had not had the time to research a lich formula). He had hoped that he would retain his mind with the rituals that he had added to the animation process. Unfortunately the process went partially wrong. Tarj’s mind did not quite return to his reanimated corpse, though much of his magic did. He retained a few dim recollections of how to use his remaining power, as well as a few memories, including that the rast would be coming to claim the sword from him. However, in order to sustain his magically animated body, he had tied his focus of power into his treasured quicksilver sword. He knew the rast would come to his tower eventually for the sword, and the thing that had been Tarj wanted to destroy the rast once and for all.
Enter Takmarek; half-dragon kobold “divinely” inspired to lead kobolds to greatness, sent on a quest by his pernicious advisor mother to get the proper conquering attitude, now utterly lovesick for a demon-thrall hag and questing for a quicksilver sword with the ability to destroy and free souls that was currently in the possession of an ultrasonic mummy about to contest for it with a vicious rast hunter.
It would yet take the kobold several weeds to reach the appointed place, however, and all that travel was through harsh and uncompromising land under the glaring sun. Many times during his travels he encountered a wicked creature seemingly born to hunt. This was his unknown rival, the rast. The two skirmished on several occasions, though since both were in a hurry to reach their destination, neither would stay to finish their fights. It was curious that they encountered each other on no less than three occasions, but neither would have put credence that two such dissimilar beings would be seeking the same item.

The rast reached the tower just before Takmarek, and the two old enemies began their bitter battle. Takmarek came upon this theater of conflict, very startled at not finding a sorcerer, but rather some kind of undead creature in combat with that dratted rast. However, despite the strangeness, Takmarek had eyes for only one thing; the brilliantly shining, constantly shifting sword in the mummy’s grasp. He watched a moment more as the mummy pummeled the rast into unconsciousness with his strange powers, then he leapt flying into the fray. Startled, the mummy turned and unleashed his sonic power against the new combatant.
Takmarek laughed as the power made his scales sing, but did him not a bit of harm. Now alarmed in the dim recesses of his brain, the mummy tried to bring the silver sword to bear, but Takmarek swooped down and snatched it from his grasp, soaring high, far and away. The mummy collapsed into dust as the focus of his power was taken out of range. Unknown to Takmarek, however, was that the rast had only been faking unconsciousness. After seeing his old enemy crumble into dust and the coveted sword taken, the rast swore and marked where Takmarek flew. That sword would be his, and he would yet get vengeance on the kobold for his vengeance denied on Tarj.
In triumph Takmarek returned to Wendare’s keep, bearing the treasured quicksilver sword. Wendare, still in her half-dragon guise, smiled and praised his fine work. She turned and showed him the place where the imperceptible shadow fell over her that marked where her soul was trapped. Setting himself, Takmarek struck at the place, and Wendare screamed in triumph as her black soul was returned to her. She dropped her disguise and grabbed him by the throat, intending to drink in the terror in his eyes before she choked the breath out of him.
Yet even as the spell of love was broken and the fires of vengeance filled the eyes of the young half-dragon, a great commotion was heard outside. Startled, Wendare turned as the doors of her keep burst open. Through them poured all of her former kobold slaves, and their entire clans, all chanting Takmarek’s name, shouting that the “winged savior” would help them destroy their enemies. Wendare’s eyes widened as she saw recently freed slaves amongst the hoard, many of them wielding their overseer’s whips and rods. In her moment of panic, her grip loosened, and Takmarek was able to grab the quicksilver sword and thrust it into the treacherous’ hag’s scheming heart. The amassed kobolds cheered as the hag died, and they mobbed their half-dragon hero.
They told him that the enslaved kobolds had finally returned to their clans. The kobold chieftains remembered their promise, and had set out with clans to help Takmarek. They waited and watched after they had arrived, waiting for Takmarek to return. When he had entered the keep with the silver sword in had (to kill Wendare, they had assumed), they had begun their war, destroying the zombie overseers and freeing the remaining slaves.
Takmarek’s heart swelled with pride, though was tempered with sorrow that his love had turned on him. Even so, he clutched his hand around the quicksilver sword and swore that this was only the beginning of great and wonderful things for the kobold people. He was ready to lead them, for how could he have defeated the mummy and the hag without being judged worthy by Kurtulmak? He declared that he must return to his tribe of Ganymok, so that Lishak could see that he had fulfilled his quest and was ready to lead.
Thus Takmarek lead his army of kobolds back into the caves, ready to return to Ganymok. Once there, they would be able to use Lishak’s magic to search for yet more kobolds that needed rescuing and overlords that needed killing. Triumphantly brandishing his quicksilver sword, Takmarek started back to Ganymok. However, trailing behind the army was one scarred, determined, rast with his eyes ever following the sword…
