D&D 5E Ironfang Invasion (IC)

Lal stroked his long beard

"I'm from a far-away land, and we don't have these "goblins" or "hobgoblins" back home - never seen them in my life. But that tower that appears out of nowhere... that is very concerning. It could be used to easily circumvent city defenses. Teleport it behind the gate, seize the gate and voila, the city is yours! Maybe the Ironfang legion, whoever they are, plan to use this as a weapon of conquest?"

"Such a powerful weapon seems... well it's a lot just to capture a small village isn't it? Either this was a test run or... the village wasn't the target, the bridge was. Unless of course they have many of these black towers!"

"So erm... who's the king, or the emperor, around here? Are there slugmen?"

"The best place to go to be safe is of course up to the locals but I fear this is no normal goblin raid." Harb frowns. Reflecting back, he's not that far from where he served but he'd dealt with many goblin clans... "We should send word to other areas, maybe even to the capital."

"I once served with a man with a pet hawk, he could use magic to look through the hawks eyes. If we had someone that could perform such a feat to look at the village that could give us a better idea of what we are up against. We will have to set up watch, I'll gather a small group for the final watch, I need to pray at Sunrise anyway."

“Listen travelers,” Aubrin started to say in a harsh tone before she took a deep breath and started again. “Gentlemen, I know you risked your lives tonight to save us and I am grateful for that, but these people here many of them have lost everything, their homes, their families, their friends, and I will not have them lose hope as well.”

Pausing again for a moment before stepping closer to the three men and lowering her voice to a near whisper. “Some of these people may not last through the night and I don’t want them to die thinking that the rest of us won’t ever return to our home city.”

“Yes the tower is concerning, yes someone must make the 150 mile long journey through dangerous forests, or bandit controlled roads to the capital, but they don’t have to do it tonight, and not all of these people can make it. Tonight we will tend to the wounded and mourn the dead. In the morning we will hold a meeting and discuss our future plans.”

Looking over a Lal, Aubrin offered a weak smile, “I don’t think that I’ve heard of a slugman.”

GM:
This evening I will post the start of the meeting, Aubrin and some of the other townspeople will talk and a general recap of the towns feelings, then the PC’s will get to jump in and add possible solutions, plans, ideas the like.

With that, Loosh will follow up on his intention to find out how the children (and their mother) fare. He will tell the children silly stories and help put them to bed, like he used to do with his younger siblings.

Vin's face goes red, "Well...this is mildly embarrassing but I have recently decoded one of the spells in my spellbook and it can do a similar thing. I apologise for not thinking of it before."

He motions over to one side of the clearing, "I'll conduct the ritual over there, it should take an hour or so."

Moving over to the aforementioned place Vin starts by removing his spellbook and opening it to the relevant page. Placing the components in the required order he starts to chant. Over the course of an hour he moves some of the components around and his chanting takes on a lower pitch until it comes out as the hooting bark of an owl.

As he hoots, a small light forms and coalesces into the form of a barnyard owl.

The morning came quickly, with the strains of the last night still evident on the faces of most of the crowd, while a few died during the night even more people trickled in wounded and dazed. As the first light of day reflected off the light drizzle that was falling there were twenty-five townspeople along with the eight heroes that had seen most of them through the night.

Considering the events of the night before the spirits were relatively high. Most of the villagers wanted to wait out the invasion, at least for a while before abandoning their homeland. Two traders Johnna and Jammeda Bjornson volunteered to make the near forty mile journey to Longshadow the closest major city to see if there was any word on this attack and to see how widespread it was.

Raux stepped up and volunteered to journey to the capital, Tamran. The journey would be a long and demanding trek through the forest, but Raux thought he would be able to make it the quickest by himself.

Vane, Rhyna, Jet, and even to most people’s surprise Kining talked about the importance of working together and staying strong through these trying times.

Finally Aubrin stood up, looking quite a bit fresher than she did last night, “I know we have all been through a lot, and you all showed a lot of courage last night, and you’ve shown just as much courage today pledging to stick together as a town and not let these black blooded bastards break your spirit.”

“I’d like to thank Johnna and Jammeda for taking the risk of journeying to Longshadow, and I’d like to likewise thank Raux for taking the very dangerous trek back to the capital. But as you all know those journeys will take time, and we need to survive until help arrives. “

Aubrin turned towards the adventures, “I’d like to thank you all for saving us last night, the courage, and the willingness to put us strangers before yourself did not go unnoticed and we are all in your debt. I know you owe us nothing and you are free to come and go as you please, but I ask you to help us survive these trying times. To help us find a more permanent home so these people can wait until help arrives. I have no right to ask any of you for this, but here I am asking, because I know we are stronger with you than without.”

“Will you stay with us; do you have any advice on how we can make it through this?”

"Aye, I'll stay," Flint says resolutely, stepping forwards.

"I offer my battle skills to defend good people of any race against those filthy goblins. Might even have some use for my magic."

He hesitates, then continues more softly, "Not sure if I can help in other ways, though."

Vin nods resolutely, "I am here for the long haul." he grins mirthlessly.

He motions his new familiar into the air and the owl fly's above the trees to get a better view. "Your people have hidden in these wood before, is there a safe place? We should also consider that while they are wasting time looking for us, they are tied down and not attacking elsewhere. I have sent my familiar to have a look around, while I do, I myself will be blind and deaf."

Sitting down he leaned against a tree and his eyes went white as he took over the senses of the owl.

Harb has a fitful sleep, the previous days events bringing up unpleasant memories, the dreams settle as they progress to Sarenrae's soothing voice bringing him out of the darkness like a beautiful sunrise.

He wakes up early and faces to the East. His shield down in front of him, holy symbol of Sarenrae, scratched but somehow unfaded, as bright as the day it was put there and prays.

He listens carefully during the meeting, weighting the peoples responses to Aubrin. They seem to find her worthy of leading them in this dark time. This is good. Looking up at the cloud covered sky and taking a deep breath before stepping forward. "This morning the clouds block the sun. Fitting for this dark time. This storm like all others will pass. I will stay."

"This isn't my fight," Corsa says, looking squarely at Aubrin. Her voice becomes more resigned as she continues, "But so long as Vin's in it, I am."

She goes to sit at the base of the tree with the bladesinger. His owl's abilities would be immensely useful, but they also left him undefended. She would stay near until his senses returned.

Leaning her head back against the tree, she looks up at the sky and wonders what her shipmates think became of her.
