I've attached a little aid I built for myself in CC2 - an alignment tracking chart. Every character starts out at a point on the chart, and only moves along an axis by commiting "overt" acts of either law, chaos, good, or evil. The amount of movement along any axis, as well as what constitutes an "overt" act are all completely subjective, of course.
As far as any sort of drawback goes, when they change alignment by crossing one of the vertical or horizontal lines, they suffer a -20% XP penalty until they gain their next level. Kinda like the 2nd Edition "change alignments and take 2x as long to level" rule, only not as harsh.
It seems to keep the PC's from acting in too random a fashion, since they never see the alignment chart - although I will tell them when they've become a new alignment.
Of course, the lines can be moved about according to ones tastes, so that you end up with a very narrow path to walk if you want to be known as lawful and good. I tend to favor a more balanced view of things though, so the version I use looks rather like a dartboard, but YMMV.
