Leif's 4E Adventuring in Encastulum [IC 01]

In the Tower -- Samwell

Samwell smiles knowingly, "From the research that I had done initially for the conjuration. I already had found out information regarding the subject of my conjuration before I began the actual calling. We must, however, be very guarded with the information. If you are found to possess it before it is time for you to employ it, I fear it could place you in great jeopardy. Ideally, I should only tell you the information when you need it, but maintaining a communication link over such a vast expanse of both space and plane, and possibly time as well, will not be easy. But, as you may guess, I am not speaking of her location. That is a matter of record, provided that one knows which record to consult."

Rydan makes gesture as if turning a lock over his mouth and tossing the key over his shoulder. "I will keep any secrets you give me."

In the Tower -- Samwell

"Of course, I trust you with the information. What concerns me is that, in the event of your capture, your captors could forcibly extract the information completely against your will. The process would likely leave you .... broken .... and wholly unwilling to continue with the mission, which would be only natural. You might very well be physically and mentally unable to continue in any event.

In the Tower -- Samwell

"There is some significant danger, of that there is no doubt. I hope that by the time you get around to the most demanding portions, you should have made significant progress in your studies that will equip you for the challenges you face. The initial part is not too strenuous at all."

OOC: Any characters pesent with Rydan should let us know that they are there somehow.... Speak, cough, clear your throat, pass gas, something.

Having remained quiet for a while to digest the information, Firil steps quietly out of the shadows.

This sounds to me very much like a hunt. A difficult one.

His grin spreads wide.

I approve and suggest we begin tracking as soon as we have gathered the appropriate information.

He seems, eager and on the balls of his feet.

In the Tower -- Samwell

Samwell continues, "The first errand that I shall task you with is to obtain for me the helm of an ogre. You may do this by stealth, by trickery, by winning it in a gambling contest, by force of arms, or any other way that you can surmise to do it. All I will say is that you should never let down your guard near the ogre, nor should you expect him to keep his word if he thinks he can gain some advantage by breaking it. Ogres are uniformly uncivilized and dastardly creatures, and they are never to be trusted to do anything that they think is against their present best interest. Plus, they are fearsomely loathesome beasts -- their stink will make the sturdiest warrior weep openly.

"From the iron and leather of the helm will be crafted a talisman that will be used in a later charm to bring you to the sphere where you may find the being who posseses the item that is the object of your quest, and, hopefully, near to her location within that sphere."

"An ogre you say. Well, that's interesting..." His eyes whirl and visions of every terrible fairy tale monster that terrorized his childhood. "Perhaps a bit of research into the habits and local ranges of said creatures would be in order."

In the Tower -- Samwell

"That, Dear Boy, can be easily arranged," exclaims Samwell, and he wheels his chair down another hallway, beckoning you to follow. After squeaking along for just a short distance, Samwell leads you to a room that must occupy almost half of the tower. It is filled along every wall with built-in bookcases, and the room extends upward through the level of the ceiling so that altogether it is three stories tall. There are walkways along each level and sliding ladders every so often to facilitate access to all books. Samwell directs your attention to a table near the center of the floor that holds a massive tome that catalogs the library's contents. "The knowledge available here is indexed in yonder tome by author and subject."

After a brief search, you locate a volume on ogres that gives you the information available in the Monster Manual plus a great deal more anthropological data, dietary habilts, biological information, and a linguistic overview.

[Research any question that you wish, and make a knowledge roll using your character's relevant skill +8, DC to be set by the DM for each question asked, three checks allowed per hour of research. Untrained knowledge skills still have the +8 modifier added, so you can basically find anything in here up to DC 28, the only variable being the time required to locate the information.]
