Rydan examines the hunk of metal both mundanely and in the magical spectrum looking for anything unusual or noteworthy.

Goblins in the Woods

Rydan inspects the oblong chunk of metal phisically and "Dweomerifically" and finds it to be an ordinary chunk of metal. The only markings on it are some light scrape marks on all corners of one end that run lengthwise back toward the opposite end. The scrapes do not run the length of the piece, but fade out about halfway down its length.

While looking at Rydan: "Why do you think he was wearing it? "What do you think it is?"

 

[Scotley]

Rydan absently scratches the back of his ear as he stares at the mysterious lump of metal. "I can't figure what it is or how it got these marks. He's a goblin. He must have thought it had some significance. Maybe it was his child's teething toy? Perhaps it used to be a weapon and he stuck it in the mouth of some critter that was trying to eat him?"

"hmm... Let's keep it just in case"

"Well, we are going to obtain the helm of an Ogre by whatever means we deem most expedient. It has been observed that further along this road is an area where Ogres are active. It was suggested we set up our base of operations at John Applejohn's roadhouse, The Quiet Harpy as this is near enough the center of reported Ogre activity." No doubt Rydan's keen memory earned him good marks in school.
