I have my opinion; you have yours. That is fine. I know that I am in a minority position on a lot of topics -- again, I take very little offense there. I did take offense here, and I am sorry that it came to that.

For the record I agree that Wraith was a bit harsh & jumped to conclusions.

I hope you took my TIC comment with the good humor in which it was intended.

Same here, I meant it in jest. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if they do hate everything.

Perhaps Wraith WAS being harsh. But so far, of late, all I've seen of Wombat is lambasting anything 3.5 related as well as anything not Glorthana and/or d20 related. So yes while he's entitled to his opinion, I think its a safe assumption that Wombat IS a little biased. (But hey we know something about about bias don't we Ash? )

Wraith was harsh, sure, but Wombat replied with a lot of self restraint. No harm no foul, and I'm sure no one really intended it to go flame-out I will say that Wombat has been, eh, a touch negative lately (from what I've seen - I don't read /all/ the threads though). Anyway, to return to the main topic, I agree that Midnight is very much NOT for everyone. Just right-thinking people! Kidding of course. Ash's post on how he runs his game was right on target, in my opinion. I'll quote it here for reference:

I think it has a lot to do with how you run your game. In mine, we use them. However, the PCs started off as commoners with about 10gp worth of equipment. Their home was destroyed and they travelled 50 miles through freezing weather with very little food. All as 1st level commoners.

They were fearing for their lives before they ever really had to fight anything. Now add in the Weapon Degredation rules from the Tome of Sorrows, the harsher exposure rules, their absolute terror at the thoughts of casting a spell, and the fact that they want see a magical weapon till about 8th level and you are a long way from anything even remotely overpowered.

Now granted, I make use of some optional rules, but it would work without them as well.

When I first heard about Midnight, I was /completely/ uninterested. I am very particular in what I buy these days. But I read some of the posts on these boards and after a while found myself curious. So I read more, particularly the two (or three?) narratives on the publisher's website. After that, a strange thing happened. I found myself excited about a campaign setting. It has been a long time since that happened! (The 13 Kingdoms being the last time.) I was on the fence for a couple of weeks until I read Paka's story hours.

After that, I was hooked. I bought it about a week later, and have never regretted the purchase.

Okay, I've taken a bit of flak here, and took no offense, but I feel I must answer here.

I own the book.

I have read through it.

I discussed it with several of my players.

I have gamed since 1976, so I feel I have a bit of a heritage regarding gaming in general and I know what my tastes are.

I do not, now or ever, label the book "crap" -- I say it is not to my tastes and that is that.

No, I have not played the game, but then again, I feel that I can judge a game is like based on reading through the rules and flavour material.

Opinions were asked for here, and I thought I gave a fairly cogent set of objections.

Is the game badly written? No. Is this a game that should be avoided at all costs? No.

Is this a game for everyone? No.

For those of you who enjoy the game, as always, I hope that you continue to find an excellent gaming experience. While this is not the game for me, I know it is the game for others.
