Making the Kobold a playable race

Good! I'll be looking forward to seeing them in action!

You've come quite the 180 degree turn from your original concept with him, haven't you?

Sorry if you're feeling pigeon-holed given the current make-up of the party and all.

We'll see what Kefk ends up as.. with your implementation, Kefk is
more interesting to me as a fighter.. with Nail's, more interesting as a rogue..

As we both know, Nail likes his way, but he is going to look over this
thread and decide on an "official" way.. and based on that, Kefk will
turn out one way or another..

Something that I think we should add to whichever definition:
weapon familiarity, specifically with Heavy Picks and Kobold
(=Gnome) Hooked Hammers.. Nail's treating kobolds as a
subterranean miner race, and so this makes sense to me.. but
does it make sense to Nail? We'll see...

Weapon Familiarity is something that's been added to some
races in the 3.5 PHB.. so it does add a bit of flavor here..

Either role would do well in our current party make-up, or even a multi-class split of the two.

While I agree that Familiarity would be a small but definite plus, and wouldn't tip my proposal over to a +1 LA, I'm not sure I'd agree with it being the racial weapon of one of your racial enemies (Gnomes), even with the novel name change you propose. ;)

I could see the miner's pick, though, given the underground bent Nail's laid out. Haven't looked at the various kinds of picks, but given their low Strength score I'd assume they'd be familiar with the two-handed version.

Thanks.

<Goes to check out Heavy Pick statistics...>

Okay, just had a chance to look over the Racial Weapon Familiarity rules vs Proficiencies. Elves are the only race to get the latter instead of the former.

Note that a Heavy Pick is a Martial Weapon. That doesn't work with Familiarity as that ability "treats a <specific> exotic weapon as a martial weapon."

So which is better? Familiarity or Proficiency? Well, for me, it comes down to how you picture Kobolds in the campaign.

If pretty much every Kobold does some heavy mining at some point in their lifetime (even the Kobold Sorcerers, cuz' they essentially get a couple free Martial Weapon Proficiency bonus feats this way), then proficiency with Picks makes sense.

If you don't do heavy mining, then perhaps Kobold warriors are usually trained in the use of whatever Exotic Weapon is chosen. That way the Kobold Sorcerer doesn't get the advantage unless they multiclass into a martial class and pick up proficiency with all martial weapons.

Either way, a couple different options readily come to mind:

1) Find an exotic weapon that "fits" Kobolds for Weapon Familiarity; or

2) Give them Light & Heavy picks as Weapon Proficiences, similiar to Elves.

Me? I like going with Weapon Familiarity personally as it helps the non-Sorcerer Kobolds without powering up the Sorcerers. I think that's a good thing given what this build already does for Sorcerers and takes away from martial types.

What Exotic Weapon would I go with? Well, given their +2 Dex, their "craftiness" and "cowardliness", I'd pick a ranged weapon. Looking over the list I could easily see either the Repeating Xbow or Nets. It would change my mental image of Nail's Kobolds a bit, but I could also see Hand Xbows or Bolas. YMMV.

Thanks.

I noticed in Unearthed Arcana today there are a number of Exotic Weapons listed in the Weapon Groups section that appear in the Arms & Equipment Guide and the Complete Warrior. One of them, the Dire Pick, seems like it might be an Exotic Melee Weapon that would fit here. It can be used 2-handed with Martial Weapon proficiency but requires an Exotic Weapon proficiency to use 1-handed, like the Bastard Sword.

For a Small Kobold it does a respectable 1d6 damage with a x4 multiplier!

How's that suit you?

Thanks.

Y'know, I've been looking so much in Complete Warrior lately at different sections, that it didn't even occur to me to look to see if they added any items.. that might very well indeed make sense.. *ponders*.. 'course, it's up to Nail..

Damage is on par with other exotic weapons.. does the same damage as a longsword, and analyzing the crit range, it's fair too (longsword 19-20/x2 = 20/x3, plus one step for the exotic wpn feat req makes it 20/x4, which is what the dire pick is.. *nods*)

test post, cuz Nail's having troubles posting here today..

There seems to be absolutely no way to delete a message (that I've written).. moderator, please post how? Then I'll delete this message and the previous..

(Am I missing something terribly obvious?)

You are or I was. :p

I didn't think anyone but a Mod could actually delete a post, even one you wrote. Otherwise, why would there be all those accidental double and triple posts laying around various threads that people edit down to "double post" and whatnot?

I think the best you can do on your own is to edit the post down to "nt" for no text. That, or go to the trouble of bothering a moderator by reporting your own post(s) and asking them to delete them.

Thankfully, I don't seem to be having any trouble with the new boards, at work or at home. :D

*smiles*.. well, you'll note that on your own messages, at the bottom there's an "edit" button.. and if you hover your pointer over it, you'll see the tooltip that says "edit/delete".. so I presume from this that it's possible.. then again, I'd think for a moderator it would make tons of sense to actually have a separate delete button, without having to go to the bother of actually going into the message etc.. so it could just be that the tooltip label is incorrect and you really can't delete your own messages after all..

Not that this has anything to do with Kobolds of course.. unless, y'know, Gina rolls that 90-93 on that Reincarnate.. you just know it's going to happen! :)
