yea i guess so its just more of the beginning im worried about. its because they are basically training from nothing to learn how to fight in every kinda of form, melee and weapons

Looking for opinions, when it comes to multiclassing how overpower would the player be if they were allowed to, for story purposes, multiclass two classes for each level?

If it is for story purposes - I would be less concerned about the balance aspect. YMMV

What I’m trying today do is like, the group is full of civilians that want to fight against an evil empire but they have no source of combat training and whatnot. So they will be trained in how to punch, use weapons and magic.
So kind of like the opening of Fable or an Elder Scrolls game? Am I understanding you right? You get the basics in multiple disciplines, as a starting point for choosing how to develop your character?

If that's the case, I'd just start the PCs at level 3, as multiclass monk/fighter/wizards or something of the sort, and then use the normal leveling rules from there, letting the players grow their characters in the classes they find best.

yea that's basically what I'm getting at. Like I've even thought about like the whole skill tree thing too. I will try that out too. Going to try some one shots and trial fights to see how it works out.

You might consider a completely different system, too. Something that's not class-based.

I have to second this. D&D pretty tightly balances class and level, as such it rewards specialisation over broad skilling. Other systems are an open framework. I've recently been playing a lot of Savage Worlds and been loving the fast paced brutal combat. Tri-Stat dX is a free PDF. I think you can get Fantasy d6 for free too. ANy of the generic RPGS systems (GURPS, Hero System, FATE, FUDGE)

Thanks, this is hard to figure out based on what I'm wanting to do. I haven't looked at all of your suggestions but I have looked at Savage Worlds and I kind of like it but from what I've looked up it seems like a combat orientated system. Is that true?
