New Concept: The half feat

Archer, interesting idea, however I have toyed another concept similar to yours but completely opposite.

How about making a class of strong feats, in which the most powerful of the existing feats and most of the class features would be.

Suggested class features that could be turned into feats are:

Rage
Uncanny Dodge
Fast Movement
Damage Reduction
Greater Rage
Superior Rage (No longer winded after raging)
Nature Sense
Animal Companion
Woodland Stride
Trackless Step
etc. etc.

Actually there is no reason why there couldn't be both.

And the most powerful class features (such as Spell Casting Ability) could even have a catagory of their own, let's call it Powers.

So here's how it would look.

Skills > (minor Feats) > Feats > (major Feats) > Powers

So, we'd come up with a list defining everything into one of these five catagories. THen we say each one costs a certain number of points and then you get so many point per level to buy additional abilities as you gain, or we'd say you get so amny of each catargory at the beginning and every level you get one or two of them. Is this what you're thinking of?

You never want to cross the line between skills and feats though. That eliminates the difference between fighters and rogues. Making class abilities feats is just making a classless d20 system.

I like half feats because it makes those lesser feats more viable. There are already some 500 feats of which 300 are really lesser feats which are rarely used because there are 200 feats which are clearly better and most characters only get around 5 feats in the average lifetime. Its seems a shame to waste those 300 feats when you could make them usable by letting people mix and match.
 

Well, one would need to go through all of the feats and make a list of the weak ones. Wizards has a list of all the feats from their products ssoemwhere on their pages. One could copy that over here and define each feat as weak or not. That would give us a basis to start the arguements of what is really weak and what isn't.

There are skill feats, save feats, initiative feats and combinations thereof. 2 skill points = +2 init = +1 save or +2 in a limited circumstance and you get any 2 bonus you like, this is what brought about the idea of the mix/match half feat. About 250 feats fit in this formula which makes the list a lot shorter. I'd break them all down into their halves and put each half up as its own half feat. I value skills less so +3 to a skill would be a half feat making alertness +3/+3 a full feat. I think the save boosting feats are about 2/3's of a feat.

All feats which a core class gets for free at first level should be half feats to reduce frivolous multiclassing. That knocks off another 10 or so feats. (the virtual feats TWF and ambidex don't fall into this category)

Feats that grant one smite, spell, slot or power count as a half feats.

Item creation feats should be half feats otherwise everything gets made as a wonderous item.

Certain similar metamagic feats should be comboed. Quicken is strong enough to stand on its own as is Twin Spell. I don't know about the rest. Metamagics have their own costs to apply so you aren't getting anything for free.

The core dex, str, int feat chains have to stay full feats as do all the monk feats.

Does that leave any feats not previously discussed?

So any feat that gives 2 binuses is a half feat. And all the feats that give bonuses to any skill is a half feat. Interesting.

So, have you tried this out yet? Have the PCs started taken these half feats over the combat ones?
