Are you new to the Table Top Role Playing Game Hobby? (Welcome!).

The Poll question is, did you start with D&D 5e, and if so, how did you come to try it.
Feel free to post in the thread and tell us more about how you came to try D&D and why you liked it enough to stay.

If you're gaming at an FLGS, go ahead and give 'em a plug, too.

I suspect you won't hear from too many new-to-RPGs people because they're still figuring out the rules of the game and not as likely to be hanging out on message boards. But it'll be interesting to see how many do respond.

This is a good idea for a poll. And I like polls.

Not sure this is the right board for them.

Maybe if it was put on the front page?

I think I'm the exception to that rule. I was interested in D&D or some sort of RPG (ShadowRun also appeals to me), but I don't know people who play in my day to day life. When the new edition came out, I bought the PHB and read through a bit of it, got a grasp for how it works. Watched a couple of Acquisitions Inc. videos and sought out a game. I'd already been to dundracon before for board games, so going there to try an RPG was a small leap.

Since then I've been playing on a regular basis.

Since there's been so much Thread Necromancy lately, why not? ;)

The Poll has no expiration.

It's been over three years since I first asked, maybe some of the new-to-the-Hobby-with-5e fans can answer, now?

Well the poll results are massively skewed! :) I answered with option 3 (even though it's not entirely true as a played a very small amount of AD&D back in the 80s - so I was aware of D&D but I didn't sink my teeth in until I caught wind of the buzz around 5e).

I agree that you won't hear from many new-to-RPG players, but not for the reason you give. Instead, I think it will be because they are younger, learned about 5e from streams, and are less likely to participate in bulletin boards. They are over on Twitch, YouTube, and maybe Reddit. But, over time, as they get deeper into TTRPGs and start googling for more obscure information and rules they'll land on sites like this. But it will be a smaller number of harder core players.

Of course, I'm just guessing. I have no demographic stats for this site.

I guess there just weren't that many new players hanging out here three years ago. I suspect there should be more.

But, no matter how skewed the poll looks (the last answer is just there because, seriously, folks around here do just like answering polls, even if they don't apply them), I'd really prefer entirely true answers, thanks!

Well, apparently I already voted in the first go round, and I put myself in with the masses (entirely truely :) )

My anecdote: none of my players frequent this site and two of them are new to D&D with 5e.
