This is the first time the public has gotten a look at the software outside of small demos at previous conventions.

D&D's 3D virtuial tabletop.
You can now watch the unveiling and demo of the upcoming 'Project Sigil' -- WotC's new 3D virtual tabletop -- as it was used during the official Dungeons & Dragons live event at Gen Con.

The event featured Aabria Iyengar as the Dungeon Master, Anjali Bhimani as Miri Yannen, Samantha Bèart as Karlach, Brennan Lee Mulligan as Dorbin Kragstone, and Neil Newbon as Astarion.

This is the first time the public has gotten a look at the software outside of small demos at previous conventions. The VTT demo is in the second half of the show.

UPDATE: THE VTT IS USED FROM 1:16 IN THE VIDEO!

My frame of reference is analogue terrain and miniatures. The movement here still seemed a bit jerky, and I assume WotC provided them high end laptops, so that's a concern. The terrain looks really good. The "miniatures" look so-so to me; I'm surprised that they aren't better. All seem generic. The spell effects were kinda cool, but again it looked to me like the laptops were struggling with frame rates, which doesn't bode well for running this on my MacBook.

I'm registered for the closed Beta and looking forward to trying the VTT; right now it looks very much like a work in progress.

Yep. there are moments. Talespire is pretty amazing but never made much traction so I'm not sure why this is. Too much pre, too much of a distraction and other reasons. It may play better for an online session, but definitly not interested in this for in person games.
Prep time is my biggest concern. I'm busy and adding an hour or more of extra prep to preparing for games isn't appealing.

I've got a DDB Masters subscription, so I do look forward to testing this out with my crew later this year.

Maybe I'm going to be the only person with this opinion, but I have to say I wasn't really impressed. I guess I have just played with a lot of VTTs and games like Solasta. It was ... fine. It reminded me of Talespire which I've played with a bit. I suppose actually playing with it might change my opinion.

Thanks for these! For the area effects I wish it lit up the floor of the affected areas or something like that to have a clearer view of where it’s actually happening.

From this little preview, the VTT looks good and seems to have the kind of functionality that is handy to have without limiting DM or player control.

But success will depend on:

*System requirements: I made the joke about not crashing, but what kind of setup does this take?

*Ease of use: There is a clear tradeoff among VTTs between chromey features and looks on the one hand and ease of use, especially set up, on the other. Even more if you are DIYing it. Can this give you both??

*Pricing:This is linked to ease of use. There may be some very cool things you can buy, including full adventures. But for how much? Will terrain and mini’s be for sale? In packs? If you get the MM on Beyond do you get minis for it? (When you buy a rule book in Roll 20 you get tokens for it).

So we will see, but so far not bad.

Absolutely. I'm running a Radiant Citadel campaign, and if WotC can give me those adventures, pre-made and at a reasonable price, I'll give it a whirl.

But if using this requires me to double my prep time for homebrew -- which is the overwhelming bulk of my RPG time -- forget it.

If I can import a 2d map, and play in 2.5d.....most of the time, that's likely enough for me. With the occasional full 3d or a few 3d pieces of terrain or whatever......Really, if it is easy to place minis and add them to combat, with full dndbeyond integration? That's pretty much how I use Foundry right now.....
