marshal sounds like a kind of cop or something, or maybe a knight.
I voted for warlord too, but I have to say that marshal could work with the right text. I too get a modern US Marshal image in my head when I hear the term, but I suspect in a setting that models historic rather than modern marshal might have another context, and the image in my head would better fit an "inspector" or something of that sort.

I like warlord, but I could live with marshal. None of the other proposed names were nearly as good or came with far too much baggage, imho.

As much as Warlord sucks, Marshal isn't enough fantasy for me... being the name of the "prototype" for this new class isn't enough

+1 vote to Warlord

PS: we don't know if the Warlord may attract followers (as per the 3E leadership feat), do we? If so that may give sense to the name..

Marshal is lame.

First of all it sounds like "martial" which lends itself to endless puns at the game table. Then there is the fact it sounds like it belongs in the American Old West. It doesn't fit a fantasy feeling in my opinion and makes it seem like the Marshal is all about law enforcement.

"Well, golly little lady, I reckon I'll round up my deputies and take care of them thar gnolls up in the hills." -rides off shooting revolver in the air.

Warlord isn't perfect but its the best so far. It carries the best connotation of an armored warrior leading his comrades in battle.

I wonder what are the odds that WotC is going to take a look at these polls and say "yeah, the guys in the other website are right, let's rename the PHB class".

Wait! I have another one! Based on those old salsa commercials.

"Boys, this Dwarven ale's made in Ptolus City!"
"Ptolus City!!"
"Git a rope!"
"Real Dwarven ale is made by Dwarves who know what Dwarven ale is supposed to taste like!"

:)

I'd definitely prefer Marshal over Warlord any day, and that's how I voted. I don't expect 4E to be printed with Marshal (as they are pretty much boxed into a commitment on the Warlord name because of the announcements and their discussions in blogs and stuff), but the Warlord class will likely be renamed as Marshal in my games.

With Regards,
Flynn

Unlikely, but that doesn't mean we can't carry on about it. ^_^

Let's make no one happy and call it: Warmarshal.

I don't know. I don't like any of the names for this class. None of them sound basic like Fighter or Wizard. They all sound far too specific. I can't hear "Marshal" without thinking of westerns (though I'm perfectly aware of it's military use), it's just my experience with the word. Apparently it originally meant "stable keeper" which I find amusing because so many people didn't like the "Warden" name due to the defensive nature it conjured up.

And Warlord just sounds like an advanced Fighter, really. It sounds more like a title than a class. Eh, who knows.

I'm going to your history teacher's house and punching him in the nose.
