Sesto only got (for this task) stupid skills, such as Religion, History, Medicine, Insight and Persuasion. Can't be used for anything good right now. I don't think Sesto will gain much Insight into the grates intention to harm him, for example... :-(
On the other hand, Sesto got a vial of Acid, which he (or Udit) could splash on a grate to potentially destroy it or the trap/ward.
He also got a vial Holy Water... trickle it out on the floor above the grate to find hiding undead or fiends (which holy water will hurt).
Another vial is full of oil... trickling it out on the floor again and set it on fire with the candle in order to create a distraction in one room while we enter the other room.
Lastly, Sesto has a mirror (steel) that can be used to look around corners... see the store room from all angles... maybe even in the prison room with a really good stealth/sleight of hand check.
But we really need to perform an Arcana check first.

You could reach the mirror through the grate and have a look around the store-room if it had a light, which it doesn't.

Not if you say so. DM decides. Otherwise, darkvision and mirror can be argued ad nauseam.

Really? Okay. I suppose people could argue "because magic" or "it doesn't explicitly say so in the description". But a mirror only works when light bounces off of it. It's not the darkvision that has problems seeing the mirror. That's no problem at all. It's having the mirror DO ANYTHING without light that's the problem. But it's true. People will argue anything...
