On the other hand, we are maybe better off keeping going forward and giving the baddies less time to gather a strong defense. Maybe we can get a rest in before the big fight with the dracolich.

Sorry, no walls of wood will be forthcoming. I traded that out for Mastery of Force. He can still make a wall, but it's invisible, and not very strong.
