[OT] 2002 World Cup, part 2

Hmmm. If I remember it right, the Japanese call Korea "Kankoku". But that is simply written with a K because the standard of transforming the Japanese syllables means that you pronounce the vocals like you would pronounce them in German and the consonants are pronounced like you would pronounce them in English.
But, in Japanese, Korea is not called Korea. And the Kanji used for "Kan" is the one used for writing, culture, and "koku" means country. So, Kankokue would be "the cultured nation".
All this is from memory. It's been a while since I studied Japanese.

Well, if we are going to name geographical places by the name the residents of that place refer to them: The international war tribunal is in "Den Haag" with a hard "G", and not in "the Hague", and the biggest Dutch lake is the "IJsselmeer"

The fact that 99% of the world population won't be able to pronounce these, is probably what led to alternate names and/or spelling.

Of course, you guys probably know more Japanese than I do. I do not profess any proficiency in the language, although I have some in French. The name Corea was not first coined by the Japanese (although I am not certain on who did). French being "la langue internationale" (the official international diplomatic language way back when), Coree (which is French for Corea; there is an accent on the first "e") translated to Corea in English was the established name before the change. The Japanese government would not spend the $$$ to change the national name of Corea (which was the recognized international name) to Korea just so that it makes more sense (considering what you told me of there being no "C" sound). But you be the judge, for it is as you say not such a big deal to most people (other than Coreans of course). I just felt slightly offed, when someone mentioned that how a name of a nation is spelt is "irrelevant".

To Black Omega: it is fairly common knowlege amonst the Coreans (regarding the history of C changing to K). Those who are interested in Corean history knows.

Sorry folks for taking up so much of the thread with stuff unrelated to the subject at hand.

Now back to our regular scheduled program and let the World Cup fever reign! ;)

Yes, what's the scudule for the semi finals?

I finally got to see Germany vs. USA from a tape.

Wow! The US team played well. I was very impressed.

Germany had ~3 really good plays on goal. 1 went in.

The US had ~3 really good plays on goal. 1 would have gone in if it didn't bounce off the arm of that "extra goalkeeper".

I think the US team actually outplayed Germany on the field. The German keeper was impressive I must admit.

It was a pretty good referee but he missed a key call. I did not like how he handed out cards. The Americans for the most part did deserve the cards they got. I think some of the German players seemed to have a habit of aggressive, "sloppy" physical play that equally deserved cards.

At last someone showed those upstart Koreans their place... :)

Now for a real Final Game Brazil x Germany ... may the best win... which of course is Brazil... Germany has been playing some awful soccer !! hehe Not that Brazil is much better mind you...

Congrats to Germany for getting to the final and South Korea for getting to the semi finals !

Yes! Korea is out, unfortunately it should have happened earlier, Spain could have won this Championship, and so could Italy, but the case with Spain was more outrageous. Oh, and I think Turkey will defeat Brazil tomorrow, especially that Ronaldo and Ronaldinho won`t be playing.

Hmm, Yuan-Ti, of course I AM Melkor, certainly not a mere mortal( woe to the one who dares to suggest otherwise!).

Now who would have dreamed of this some weeks ago? Germany in the Finals! Hurra! Today, they almost played decent football.

And next sunday, we will win over Turkey. :D
