D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Solace agrees to take the second watch, chatting briefly with Stool as they transfer. She'd taken off her boots to rest, and had kept them off for the shift. Looking over her leather armour during guard duty, she realizes that there are many stains on it, only some of which come from inside of her. Since she has been given the protection of Kamael's mage armour,* she takes it off, and wears her ordinary clothes. It is surprisingly refreshing, despite the staleness of the subterranean air.

At the end of her shift, she makes a more dedicated study of the studded leather armour she picked up when she retrieved her possessions. It will require some adjustment, but it is cleaner than the armour she wears, and with a few adjustments, she believes she can make it both well fitting and stylish. Okay, several adjustments. Still, it is worth doing, if only to have a backup for protection should Kamael's spell become unavailable, or better deployed.

Her leather armour packs up into a small, tight ball. She considers discarding it, but feels that it is best not to leave a trail of possesses, and the cloth might prove to be of use. She knows how to work leather.

Day 3, level 3

With Kamael, Raza, and Solace taking their rest, the last light spell petered out soon after Kamael fell asleep. The young aasimar had diligently cast and re-cast light ad nauseam the last twenty-four hours, but the spell tended to extinguish while he slept. Brinn, Stool, and Jimjar were plunged into darkness. Stool and Jimjar seemed not to mind; their innate ability to maneuver in the dark was a help. For his part, Brinn spent long minutes carefully tuning his ears in lieu of relying on his eyes. He was alert for every drop of condensed water falling from rock, the occasional flutter of something winged flying elsewhere down the tunnel, the scritch-scratching of an errant insect trekking up the passageway wall. Once, during his shift, he thought he heard a stutter step behind the group in the direction they'd already traveled, but as soon as he went rigid with the effort of listening, all sound ceased. He heard nothing else during his watch.

During their shift, Turvey nattered at Solace, mainly about her armor. The deep gnome was hard to understand--he had a queer dialect to his Undercommon, and his voice was naturally scratchy, as if he'd drunk too much whiskey and smoked too many cigars. Still, his admiring pawing at her armor was clear enough, as was the light of curiosity in his eager eyes. He admired her stitching, gesticulating to their even minuteness. Solace made out a hesitant query: "Topsy allays 'anted a fancy suit of plate, like some pale-skin from up top. But she's spider meal now, so's mebbe you're teachin' me hows it is you stitch so fine. Fish gut?" Turvey prodded at the stitches a second time, then looked up at Solace, clearly waiting for an answer to whatever question it was he'd asked.

During the last watch, Kago grunted twice but was otherwise silent as a tomb. Still, the orc's quick eyes worked keenly in the dark, and it seemed he took in much that others overlooked. Raza spied him trapping a beetle and unceremoniously popping the unwitting and unlucky insect in his mouth. Kago silently masticulated his prize, his eyes on Raza all the while, daring her to comment.

OOC: Make a Perception check, GlassEye. If there is a light source during Kago and Raza's watch, say what it is, please. The default is that it is dark (which for Raza (and Brinn) will mean she suffers the blinded condition. If it is dark, all sight-based Perception automatically fails for her unless she's operating under her darkvision spell. She could still listen, maybe. ALL: If anyone wanted to do anything in particular during your watch shift, please declare it.

Raza Thulcandra

When Raza and Kago's turn for watch arrives, Raza sits up. She moves stiffly and clumsily in the dark, blinded by the lack of light and stiff from sleeping on stone. She considers casting her produce flame throughout her watch but she has magic available and opts for darkvision instead. Kago seemed uninterested in conversation so Raza did not speak, not even when Kago ate the beetle. She expected no special consideration from the orc and demanded none.

Raza's eyes--sharpened by magic--made out a pair of figures at the limit of her vision, in the tunnel behind the party. One was short, the other tall. The closest of the pair was the shorter, and it looked as if it had thirty feet to go before reaching the edge of Kamael's caltrops. The large one stopped and remained motionless while the shorter crept closer, plainly trying to gain the party before anyone noticed.

Raza's eyes flicked to Kago. Astoundingly, the orc had fallen asleep. He wasn't the only one. The others were asleep, too.

Raza Thulcandra

'Curious.' Raza remained as motionless as she were able as she watched Buppido move towards the group where they slept. She could only assume the pair had ill intent but she waited to see if Buppido would navigate the caltrops without injury. She wasn't entirely sure how she would respond but she felt the touch of the goddess on the back of her neck. Someone would die this night. Until she felt it time to act, she would wait.

His Highness hung back.

Raza watched as Buppido crept closer. He sported a dagger in his left hand. The derro was nimble, she knew. Buppido reached the edge of Kamael's caltrops and started picking his way through. He advanced five feet before stumbling on a loose bit of shale. His foot landed sideways, a caltrop piercing the exposed underside. Buppido dropped the dagger he'd been holding and wheezed in pain.

OOC: Buppido is now 35 feet from Brinn, who--at the rear of the resting formation--is closest to the derro. Everyone but Raza is asleep.

Raza watched Buppido move closer until she saw the knife drop from his hand, making clear his intent. She smiled grimly; one thing for certain, Buppido took pain well. She planned to see how well, indeed.

"Brinn! Awake!" she yelled, her voice loud and powerful from one so small.

At the same time, she cast faerie fire upon Buppido, hoping to also catch His Highness.

SURPRISE ROUND

Raza yelled for Brinn and cast faerie fire against Buppido and Derendil. The spell failed to reach His Highness, who'd been malingering further back in the tunnel, but it caught Buppido off guard. Raza's spellcraft limned the derro in violet light; his glow gave off dim light for a ten-foot radius. In the inky dark of the tunnel passageway, the violet light seemed nigh brilliant. Buppido clutched his dagger closer and continued hopping on one foot, finally flinging off the caltrop that had driven into the pad of his foot.

Brinn woke to Raza's yell, spied Buppido bent over a dagger, and spun into action. The monk sprinted forward and sailed through the air, landing a kick on the derro that dealt 7 points of damage. All the wind whooshed out of Buppido's lungs with an audible whump. Brinn followed up his leaping kick with a flurry of fists, dealing first another 4 points of damage, then finishing with Other Fist for 5 more points of damage. Buppido dropped like an empty sack, groaning once, then going still. His small form continued to glow violently violet, even after Brinn slew him.

From deeper in the tunnel passageway, His Highness gawped, "I say. What on earth have you done?!" His tone implied shock.

OOC: ROLL INITIATIVE! This counts as an interruption to your long rest, FYI. Raza got a surprise action (she cast faerie fire and yelled for Brinn. What Brinn just did counts for his action this round. I'll pause here and let Kobold Stew, GlassEye, and industrygothica (who should be joining us again tomorrow, yay!) roll for initiative. Even with advantage on his saving throw, Buppido failed his Dexterity DC 12 saving throw to dodge Raza's faerie fire. GlassEye, will you please add Raza's Spell Save DC to her mini sheet? Attacks against Buppido went with advantage...until Brinn promptly killed him. Now they go at nothing. Because he is dead. DEAD, I tell you. Sniff. The spell, however, did not extend to His Highness.

Raza watched Brinn drop Buppido with several swift attacks. Perhaps the creature didn't take pain well after all.
