At a certain point the sprouts become just filler.
... which is still far too much sprout for me.
Yeah, Kelsey Dionne came into the private publishers discord, talked to us how she did stuff, and is cool. I wish people like her the best. With the fall of Goodman Games it's harder and harder to defend the scene, but there are still quite a few good people there making quite a lot of great stuff.
A lot recipes lean on bacon for them because, well, bacon is delicious and pork pairs nicely with brassica. But imo as a former brussels sprouts hater you can use a neutral oil in a more moderate amount (to a point, some of it's just a necessity like with salt) and they still come out great. It's hard not to notice how many recipes for brussel sprouts are still based on copious amounts of salt and fat (often bacon) to cover up the flavor of brussel spouts.
If I wanted food to actually be enjoyed I could replace the brussel sprouts in almost any recipe with something better and enjoy it more. And if I wanted to pretend the food was healthy I couldn't add that much grease and salt to it. So I still conclude there's little reason to bother with them.
God damn that makes a lot of sense, because I grew up my entire life having brussel sprouts being the butt of every "bad-tasting vegetable" joke and now they're like my favorite thing, but then it's hard to go wrong with that many garlic cloves and that much balsamic vinegar.
Yep. I hated Brussels sprouts until I tried them roasted with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper. They're not my favorite veg, but they're not as atrocious as they used to be.A lot recipes lean on bacon for them because, well, bacon is delicious and pork pairs nicely with brassica. Both of these statements are true for me. The most heartbreaking thing about OSR, for me, is how it has been co-opted and twisted by a vocal minority.Thats unfortunate, because I think it makes for a better game.

Old School Renaissance.
That name used to conjure up memories of playing the Red Box Rules with my middle-school friends, good times on The Isle of Dread and the Master of the Desert Nomads...the game had more freedom, more creativity, the rules were there but they weren't in the way, ya know? But now, instead, that name only conjures up memories of YouTube reaction videos and gray-haired gatekeepers making hurtful comments about my friends.
~sigh
I still enjoy OS, but I'm done with the R.
Eh. There have always been some bad elements in the OSR scene. The 2014 PHB had a scandal connected to an OSR creator who was name-checked there, and that guy was certainly not alone. With the fall of Goodman Games it's harder and harder to defend the scene, but there are still quite a few good people there making quite a lot of great stuff.
There are people in that space who want to disassociate from the term for probably the same reasons.osr to me has just come to represent something negative
