Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yep. There is a vast gulf between how average people use words and how scientists/medical professionals use them. It’s jargon. Take the word theory as one example. Two wildly different meanings when used by lay people vs scientists.

Theory even has different meaning between the sciences and the humanities

I think if someone wants to speak authoritatively about something like vaccines, even if they're cynical about big pharma it behooves them to learn the difference between vaccines and other drugs. If they can't bother to do that--well, perhaps not opening one's mouth might be a viable alternative.

Definitely people are claiming authority they don't have. But like I said, that is just a typical wednesday on the internet. When someone claims authority online I just assume they aren't a real authority unless I have very good reason to believe otherwise

Sometimes authority is foisted upon you, online, that you make no claim to. Let me rant all over you some time about when some people decided to name me the head of a motorcycle club, so they could blame me for a one sided war that they started. No, not that sort of motorcycle "club."

Were you at least a member of the motorcycle club in question?

Yes. I maintained the mailing list and the website, plus did a little photography during rides. The few of us who started the club clearly stated that there were no leaders and we existed solely for the purpose of bringing people together, who wanted to ride in a group, and find some interesting places to ride.

Since this was not 'one of those types of motorcycle clubs' am I correct in assuming the war they pinned the blame on you for was an internal spat of some kind?

Yes and no. Another group, that was trying to set itself up to eventually be for-profit, in some way, was using our list to try and drum up members. I felt that was crass and said so, so I became the target.
