Sure but there is also just pointing to any criticisms as that (or some other social ill or toxic behavior).
So, I was referring to review-bombing upthread. Don't even try to tell me that criticism launched
before the movie could be seen is legitimate.
Also, when the "criticism" is part and parcel with hounding performers off of social media, you can go pound sand and not waste your time trying to tell me it is legitimate.
When you have critique of female characters, and you will twist and turn, stretch and bend like Plastic Man to justify how male characters from the same property are not similar, I am sorry, but that's bogus too.
When the vehemence of criticism only seems to land on movies with female leads, again, I'm sorry, that's stretching credulity. I don't buy it.
Women in movies are not beyond critique. But that critique needs to be pretty solidly supported and demonstrably even-handed. If you join a chorus of sexists, you need to take the effort to really separate yourself from them.
And if that's not fair, I
don't really care - needing to separate yourself from toxic people is nowhere near as unfair as what happens to the performers at the hands of toxicity.
With the right to express an opinion comes a responsibility to do it well. If someone doesn't want to take that responsibility seriously, we are under no onus to take the expression of their opinion seriously, either.
