EDIT: Actually after a glance a few threads, there are easily half a dozen absolutely disingenuous posters going on and on, gaslighting anyone within reach.

Way to waste your time on a Friday gentlemen.

Methinks that engaging in gaslighting disqualifies you from being a gentleman in the modern sense of the term.

I agree completely!

However, I have also noticed that gaslighting seems to have gained currency as a general term of discourse and opprobrium, and is rarely used to describe actual gaslighting.*

Not that I point that out ... obviously, if you were to do so, then the person would say that you're gaslighting them.

*This is not to say that actual gaslighting isn't real, and isn't reprehensible. It is.

No true gentleman is a Scotsman?

I feel like I was absent that day of fallacy class.
Years ago I was a mod on a forum that was attached to an online motorcycle magazine, for which I also did race photography. There was one poster who was a rampant bigot, who was always crowing about his "Scottish Heritage." He would constantly take shots at me, personally, during debates. Well I would debate and he would generally just ad hominem. I could have banned him but i had a plan, that involved his pride. He pulled the No True Scotsman, taking a shot at me because of my obviously Scottish last name. I made my one and only ad hominem attack by telling him that neither he, nor I were as Sottish as my friend of East Indian descent, who was actually born in Glasgow.

The fireworks could have been seen from Mars. The rant he went on got him permanently banned from the forum by the site's owner, who knew him personally.
