D&D 5E (2014) playtest 18th level PC vs town...lFqW reborn... or not

I dunno. I think if that wizard had shapechange, or meteor swarm, along with fly and some summoning spells he wouldnt even need the other party members to take out the town.

Which of course says a lot about full casters compared to martials. I honestly don't think they will ever be able to directly compete with the utility full spellcasters bring.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say they could solo the town... concentration is a pain, but yes if the name of the thread wasn't a hint the Wizard was way overpowered...

I went out of my way to make a simple caster and a complex fighter, and the simple caster is both more powerful and more complex then the complex fighter...

Yeah it looks that way. A fight against numerous low hp enemies is always going to be skewed toward someone with AOE capabilities however, so you need to factor that in. A fighter making all of his attacks plus an extra attack from a bonus action (especially with power attack and a bless spell on him) should be able to crank out a stupid amount of damage each and every turn, especially against a few, high hp opponents. Even moreso once you start to look at things like legendary resistance.

Although, couldn't you drill the fighter's AC high enough that the townsfolk simply can't really hurt him? I'm assuming by 18th level, you could get your AC over 22 without too much difficulty. Yes, I know that you still hit 1 in 20 (do those still count as crits?) but, with a bit of bottlenecking, you could get to the point where the baddies simply can't shoot that much at you. Heck, if you're in melee combat with a few, that will give disadvantage to shooters, meaning that they need to roll two twenties in a row (with the disadvantage) in order to hit you. 1 in 400 attacks means you're pretty much invincible. With the Survivor feature, you're going to heal any damage from commoners pretty easily.

Sure, it might take you a heck of a long time to wade through the townsfolk - you don't have fireballs after all - but, you are still going to get it done aren't you?

ok, so now to justify my fighter... ugh, I know now why more people don't do this kind of thread...

Sir Talian
Yea, he’s not really a knight, but he likes the title sir, it makes him feel important. He is mostly a thug, but one that isn’t really evil per say.
Half elf 18th level Soldier Fighter (battle master) 18

Str 20 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 12 Wis 15 Cha 14

Maneuvers: Disarming attack, Feinting attack, Lunging attack, Maneuvering attack, Parry, Rally, Riposte, Sweeping attack, Trip attack

Relentless, Know your enemy, Student of War, Second wind, Action Surge
Extra Attacks, Indomitable, Fighting style (Defensive)

Feats: Lucky, Mage Slayer, Savage Attacker, Inspiring Leader, 3 stat bumps

Magic items: +1 flaming long sword, +1 Shield, +1 long bow, +1 chain armor, Ring of spell storing (hast), 20 flaming arrows

3 attacks melee(+5 str+6 prof +1 sword) +12 to hit 1d8+1d6+6
Ranged (+2dex +6 prof +1 bow) +9 to hit 1d8+1d6+3

AC 21 (17 Chain +3 shield+1 skill)

with a +9-+12 to hit he only missed a handful of times.

with a 21 AC he was pretty awesome in the second and fourth encounters, but in the first he wasn't in armor yet so he only had 16AC (10 base +2 dex +3 shield +1 skill) when he picked up his stuff, and the third encounter he had to use his bow so he had to stow the shield so AC 18.

The fight he died in had a

he fought the Veteran with +1 adamantine splint and the +1 longsword at one point... +6 to hit 1d8+4 damage can't be crited and has an AC 19... so the fighter could hit easy (needs a 6) but the vet could still hit on a 15+... putting more help with him was pretty bad.

Why would you use both? Shape change into a dragon?

Fly is used so ONLY people with ranged can attack you. You fireball them.

I don't think anyone is I unappreciative but these few tweaks are drastic in their effectiveness is all.

I think the reality is you aren't invincible anymore which this does prove. But smart level 18s wouldn't die IMO
